Order of Play for Day One of the French Open with Alexander Zverev, Ons Jabeur, Maria Sakkari and Carlos Alcaraz all taking to the court.
Alexander Zverev and Stefanos Tsitsipas made it through to the quarter-finals of the Italian Open on Thursday, increasing the prospect of a last four clash between the pair. World number three Zverev saw off Alex de Minaur 6-3, 7-6 (7/5) in the early match on centre court at the Foro Italico to set-up a last-eight clash with either Cristian Garin or Maran Cilic. The German was unruffled in his victory over Australian De Minaur as he looks to bounce back from being trounced by teenage phenomenon Carlos Alcaraz in the Madrid final on Sunday.
Jannik Sinner battled hard to find a way past compatriot Fabio Fognini at the Italian Open, 6-2 3-6 6-3. The encounter pitted two of the home favourites against one another in something of a 'derby', and provided some memorable moments of quality in the customarily stunning setting of the Foro Italico, which Stefanos Tsitsipas had earlier on Wednesday described as «like the Colosseum».
Nicola Pietrangeli, who told AFP he believes Jannik Sinner will be in the top five by the end of the year. Pietrangeli, a two-time French Open champion in 1959 and 1960, said it was brilliant that last year's Wimbledon finalist and world number eight Matteo Berrettini and Sinner -- ranked 13th -- were mixing it with the best in the men's game. It has been a long time coming.
Dominic Thiem’s wait for a win continues after Fabio Fognini recorded a 6-4 7-6(5) victory over the Austrian at the Italian Open in Rome. Thiem was chasing his first victory of the year, having lost to Andy Murray at the Madrid Open last time out as he continues his comeback from a wrist injury. Ad/> The road to recovery has been difficult for the Austrian, but there were early signs he could trouble Fognini, who had the crowd behind him at his home event.
ROME : Three-times Grand Slam champion Stanislas Wawrinka won his first match in 15 months as he moved into the second round of the Italian Open while Dominic Thiem fell in the first round yet again to remain winless on the Tour this year.
As Dominic Thiem continues his comeback from a wrist injury that sidelined him for 10 months, the Austrian is dealing with a wide range of emotions; from feeling frustrated by his current form to being positive about the improvements he is making every day. One thing Thiem is relying on is his belief that worst part of this whole experience is fully behind him. Ad/> “What everybody is telling me, also from my team, is that the toughest period is done.
