WTCR Qualifying flash: Girolami heads Honda team-mate Guerrieri

Néstor Girolami scorched to the Race 1 pole position by pipping his ALL-INKL.COM Münnich Motorsport team-mate Esteban Guerrieri, in an eventful qualifying session at WTCR Clean Fuels for All Race of France on the streets of Circuit de Pau-Ville. Girolami secured the pole position by topping the top-five Q3 shoot-out, after the Q2 session was interrupted by a heavy accident for Thed Björk in his Cyan Performance Lynk & Co, from which the Swede was fortunate to emerge uninjured. In the 30-minute Q1 session, Mikel Azcona’s BRC Hyundai N Squadra Corse Elantra N TCR topped the times ahead of Girolami, Gilles Magnus (Audi), Guerrieri and Ma Qing Hua (Lynk & Co).

Santiago Urrutia set a hot pace in the first free practice session of 2022 at WTCR Race of France as the WTCR – FIA World Touring Car Cup field relished their first chance to acclimatise to the Circuit de Pau-Ville. Yann Erhlacher, Mikel Azcona and Esteban Guerrieri all spent time at the top during the 45-minute session, but it was Uruttia’s Cyan Performance Lynk & Co 03 TCR that set the pace in the final moments with a time of 1m20.160s, an impressive 0.489s quicker than King of WTCR Ehrlacher.

Remembering when… WTCR last started on the streets

Recent confirmation that Circuit de Pau-Ville in France will host rounds one and two of the 2022 WTCR – FIA World Touring Car Cup revives a tradition that began in 2018 when a street track staged the opening weekend of a WTCR campaign. Circuit Moulay El Hassan in Marrakech was the setting of the first event of both the 2018 and 2019 seasons.
