Clayton McMillan saw enough in Munster’s performance to give him confidence for the rest of the season despite seeing his side open their United Rugby Championship campaign with a 26-20 home defeat to Glasgow Warriors in Limerick on Saturday evening.
Munster’s season may have opened with a home defeat to Glasgow Warriors last weekend but there were genuine grounds for optimism that Clayton McMillan’s squad laid down some exciting markers for the months ahead, not least in attack.
Munster can call on Ireland international duo Craig Casey and Jeremy Loughman for this Saturday’s United Rugby Championship round two clash at home to the Bulls but there was mixed news for head coach Clayton McMillan on the injury front following an opening defeat to Glasgow Warriors.
There was plenty to like about Munster’s performance. Weakened by injuries, they unveiled some well-choreographed strike plays, built a deserved 17-7 interval lead but, in the heel of the hunt, they began the season with a 26-20 home defeat.
Although palpably frustrated and disappointed after a game that gradually and grimly got away from Munster, Clayton McMillan also expressed pride in his team’s performance despite an opening day loss at Thomond Park against Glasgow.

Munster academy outhalf Tom Wood will undergo surgery on his shoulder this week and has been ruled out until the new year. His head coach Clayton McMillan had last week expressed the hope that the 20-year-old would be in the mix for this Saturday’s opening URC game against Glasgow at Thomond Park (kick-off 5.30pm) but the prognosis has proved worse than feared.
At times, Clayton McMillan cut a dispirited figure amid the fallout from Munster’s troubled campaign and anticlimactic exits in Europe and the United Rugby Championship (URC) last season, but there’s little doubting his enthusiasm has been renewed over summer. Buoyed by shaping a changed coaching ticket, it’s also clear McMillan wants to put a different stamp on Munster this season.
