Holger Rune has slammed Casper Ruud for showing him a lack of respect following their fiery French Open quarter-final match, as a spat between the two Scandinavian tennis stars also embroiled their parents. Rune claimed that Ruud gloated in his face after winning 6-1 4-6 7-6 (7-2) 6-3 on the night, with the Norwegian now taking on Marin Cilic in the semi-finals on Friday. Ad/> «The team is really nice and sweet, but then he (Ruud) goes straight to me and shouts 'JAAA' straight up in my face,” Rune told Ekstra Bladet.
Casper Ruud became the first Norwegian man to reach a Grand Slam semi-final on Wednesday when he defeated Danish teenager Holger Rune in four sets at the French Open.
Holger Rune has been forced to deny shouting ‘leave!’ to his mother, Aneke, during his French Open quarter-final defeat to Casper Ruud. The 19-year-old was beaten 6-1 4-6 7-6 (7-2) 6-3 on the night, in a match which ran until 12.30am in Paris. Ad/> Frustrations clearly reached boiling point for the 19-year-old, as at one stage he was heard to shout 'leave!' a number of times in succession.
Novak Djokovic deserves more respect
Eurosport experts Tim Henman and Alex Corretja have offered words of advice to teenager Holger Rune after the Dane appeared to offer a “frosty” handshake to victor Casper Ruud at the end of their quarter-final match at Roland-Garros. Ruud won 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-3 to set up a semi-final clash with Marin Cilic for a place in Sunday’s final, and Henman believes Rune may regret his somewhat petulant actions. Ad/> He said: «That was certainly a pretty frosty handshake.
Marin Cilic said it was a "great achievement" as he joined Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Andy Murray in becoming only the fifth active player to make the semi-finals at all four Slams. Cilic, the 2014 US Open champion, fired 33 aces past seventh-seeded Andrey Rublev to reach his first French Open semi-final on Wednesday with a 5-7, 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (10/2) win. He also crashed 88 winners in the four-hour 10-minute tie and will play either eighth-seeded Casper Ruud of Norway or Danish teenager Holger Rune for a place in Sunday's final. "Absolutely fantastic achievement for me. To be mentioned among them," said 33-year-old Cilic. "I'm feeling great on the court, enjoying myself, being me, playing my own game. It's paying off, and I am enjoying the run." Rublev, playing in his fifth quarter-final at the majors, grabbed the first set but wilted under a Cilic barrage over the next two.
Casper Ruud battles past Holger Rune 6-1 4-6 7-6(2) 6-3 to reach his first ever Grand Slam semi-final. Ruud, widely regarded as a clay-court specialist, was put to the test by an impressive Rune, but it was the Norwegian who came out on top in four sets to book his place in the final four. Ad/> The 23-year-old will face Marin Cilic in the next round as he looks to win his first Grand Slam title.
