Italy's Alberto Dainese won his maiden Giro d'Italia stage on Wednesday when the DSM rider clinched victory with a perfectly timed sprint to the finish in stage 11, a 203-kilometre (126.14 miles) ride from Santarcangelo di Romagna to Reggio Emilia.
After Domenico Pozzovivo’s successful moonlighting as a leadout man for teammate Biniam Girmay on Tuesday it was Romain Bardet’s turn to play a huge role in a superb victory for his DSM teammate Alberto Dainese in Wednesday’s Stage 11 to Reggio Emilia. Frenchman Bardet piloted Dainese around the final bend ahead of the home straight after Team DSM shook up their tactics and backed the Italian 24-year-old instead of their regular Dutch fast-man Cees Bol in what could be the last mass bunch sprint of the 105th edition of the race.

After Biniam Girmay's historic victory on Tuesday, another chance for the fast men arrives on Stage 11. Only this time, Mark Cavendish (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl) and Caleb Ewan (Lotto Soudal) will expect to feature. The flat-track bullies were cruelly distanced by their more versatile, but slower, rivals during the early hills on Stage 10, but there should be no repeat on the pan-flat run from Santarcangelo di Romagna to Reggio Emilia.
Mark Cavendish (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl) and Caleb Ewan (Lotto Soudal) were again distanced as the Giro d’Italia went uphill – with their more versatile, but slower, sprint rivals keen to remove them from the equation on Stage 10. Alpecin-Fenix and Intermarche-Wanty-Gobert Materiaux, riding for pre-stage favourites Mathieu van der Poel and Biniam Girmay respectively, wanted to ensure Cavendish and Ewan were distanced before the finish.
Mark Cavendish’s hopes of further wins at the Giro d’Italia have suffered a huge blow after his Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl leadout rider, Michael Morkov, withdrew from the race with a fever ahead of Stage 7. Cavendish and Morkov have formed a formidable alliance since the Brit’s arrival at Quick-Step last year, combining to win Stage 3 at the Giro and four stages at the 2021 Tour de France.
