PARIS: International sports bodies are taking wildly varying stances on allowing Russian and Belarusian athletes and teams to compete while the war in Ukraine continues.
MIAMI GARDENS, Florida: Former US Open winner Bianca Andreescu and world number two Aryna Sabalenka cruised into the last-16 of the Miami Open on Sunday with straight sets victories at Hard Rock Stadium. Sabalenka’s power was simply too much for Marie Bouzkova with the Belarussian breaking serve twice in the opening set on the way to a 6-1, 6-2 victory. Any chance of a comeback from Bouzkova vanished when she was broken in the opening game of the second set and Sabalenka was in no danger on her serve, not facing break point at any time in the 66 minute encounter.
Canada's Bianca Andreescu defeated American Sofia Kenin in straight sets Sunday to advance to the fourth round of the women's singles draw at the Miami Open tennis tournament.
Bianca Andreescu defeated fellow former Grand Slam champion Sofia Kenin 6-4 6-4 to continue her Miami Open run and set up a last-16 clash with Ekaterina Alexandrova, who beat Belinda Bencic as another big name fell. Ninth seed Bencic might have fancied her chances of claiming her third title of the year after seeing several big names go out in the early rounds, including Ons Jabeur, Caroline Garcia, Coco Gauff and Maria Sakkari.
MIAMI GARDENS, Florida: Carlos Alcaraz picked up a straight-set win at the Miami Open on Friday to keep his world No. 1 ranking over idle Novak Djokovic.
Canada's Bianca Andreescu upset Greek seventh seed Maria Sakkari 5-7 6-3 6-4 to reach the Miami Open third round on Friday while Russia's Andrey Rublev survived a tough battle against American J.J. Wolf to reach the last 32.
MIAMI GARDENS, United States: Fourth seed Ons Jabeur crashed out of the Miami Open on Friday, losing her opening match to Russian qualifier Varvara Gracheva 6-2, 6-2. Tunisian Jabeur, beaten finalist at Wimbledon and the US Open last year, has been working her way back from injury and on her return earlier this month went out in the third round at Indian Wells.
