As the Women's Premier League gears up for a grand beginning, all the five cricket franchises have finalised their teams at the first ever player auction, which took place on 13 February in Mumbai. Gujarat Giants owned by Adani Sportsline has signed up an exciting line-up including the likes of Ashleigh Gardner (3.2 Cr), Beth Mooney (2 Cr), Harleen Deol (40 Lakhs) and Sneh Rana (75 Lakh). After a heated bidding war, the Gujarat Giants opened their account with the pick of Australian all-rounder Ashleigh Gardner for INR 3.2 crore, the joint second highest at the Auction. The 3-time World Champion has been one of the pillars of strength for Australia, and opened her 2023 T20 World Cup with a 5/12 against New Zealand.
Aussie wicketkeeper Beth Mooney is the next biggest buy of the franchise as she earned a big fat cheque of Rs 2 crore. The auction for the inaugural edition of the Women's Premier League turned out to be a memorable one. The event, which was held in Mumbai on Monday, saw India vice-captain Smriti Mandhana being sold to Royal Challengers Bangalore for Rs 3.4 crores, thus becoming the costliest buy. Among overseas players, Australia's Ashleigh Gardner was picked by Gujarat Giants for Rs 3.2 crore and England's Nat Sciver-Brunt got the same amount from Mumbai Indians. India captain Harmanpreet Kaur went to Mumbai Indians for Rs 1.80 crore while Deepti Sharma went to UP Warriorz for Rs 2.60 crore. Shafali Verma got Rs 2 crore from Delhi Capitals. Jemimah Rodrigues got Rs 2.2 crore from the same team.

Renuka Singh bagged 18 ODI wickets at 14.88, economy 4.62 while the pacer scalped 22 T20I wickets at 23.95, economy 6.50. Renuka beat Australia's Darcie Brown, England's Alice Capsey and compatriot Yastika Bhatia to become the recipient of ICC Emerging Women's Cricketer of the Year 2022. The 26-year-old has generated a lot of noise as a result of her meteoric rise during a hectic year for the India team.
