Attila Tassi claimed a first podium finish in this season’s WTCR – FIA World Touring Car Cup as he battled to a hard-earned Vila Real podium in the 100th WTCR race yesterday. The Hungarian’s runner-up finish, which followed a podium earlier in the day for fellow Honda Racing driver Néstor Girolami (ALL-INKL.COM Münnich Motorsport), also marked the first WTCR podium for LIQUI MOLY Team Engstler as a Honda customer team.
Rob Huff made history at WTCR Race of Portugal in Vila Real this afternoon, winning the WTCR − FIA World Touring Car Cup’s 100th race in dramatic fashion as the Joker Lap proved decisive in the outcome of both races on the iconic street track.
Starting from pole position in race one, Urrutia led Ehrlacher away and the pair quickly opened a gap to the Munnich Motorsport Honda of Nestor Girolami.
While it was a WTCR Race of Portugal Qualifying woe for home hero Tiago Monteiro in Vila Real yesterday, his fellow LIQUI MOLY Team Engstler driver Attila Tassi earned himself a huge opportunity to win the WTCR – FIA World Touring Car Cup’s 100th race. Tassi qualified ninth in the second phase of Qualifying on Saturday to earn himself a front-row start for the partially-reversed-grid Race 2, which also doubles as the WTCR’s milestone event, later today.
Yvan Muller ensured he will start Race 2 at WTCR Race of Portugal – the 100th WTCR – FIA World Touring Car Cup race to be run – from pole position after qualifying in P10 at Vila Real. The Frenchman, who is one of only three drivers to have competed in every WTCR race run so far, will start the partially reversed-grid second encounter from the front beside LIQUI MOLY Team Engstler’s Attila Tassi, who qualified ninth in his Honda Civic TCR.
Eighth different drivers have won WTCR Race of Portugal since the event joined the WTCR – FIA World Touring Car Cup in 2018. This is a quicker reminder of who they are and where and when they won.
