NEW DELHI : India is "seriously" considering a bid to host the 2036 Olympic Games, sports minister Anurag Thakur said.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) said it was not consulted in the decision by the Olympic Council of Asia to pick Saudi Arabia as the hosts of the 2029 Asian Winter Games.
With the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) scrapping 67kg from the Paris Games, Jeremy, who won the gold in the category at the CWG, will bulk up to compete in the 73kg weight class. However, India already has representation in the weight division in Sheuli, who is the national record holder and reigning CWG champion in the 73kg division. The two will now go head to head in a bid to seal qualification for the 2024 Olympics as only one lifter per country is allowed in a weight class.
We are talking about women’s World champion Nikhat Zareen and two-time World youth champion Nitu Ghanghas – both a CWG gold medallist at the recently-held Games in Birmingham. While Nikhat won the gold in the light flyweight (50kg) division, the Strandja memorial champion Nitu came out trumps in the minimumweight (48kg) competition. But, the scenario will change for the Hangzhou Asiad in September-October next year and the Paris Games.
After a great show at CWG, bigger challenge awaits IndiansNEW DELHI: Commonwealth Games has traditionally been a happy hunting ground for the Indian wrestlers. Birmingham 2022 was no exception. India ruled the wrestling mat in a depleted field, getting medals in all 12 weight categories and improving the gold tally from previous edition's five to six this time. Bajrang Punia, Deepak Punia, Ravi Dahiya and Naveen finished on top of the podium in the men's freestyle category, and Vinesh Phogat and Sakshi Malik in the women's section. India, a wrestling powerhouse among the Commonwealth nations, didn't face much problem in fending off the challenge from Canadian, Pakistani and Nigerian grapplers. Post Birmingham, India are ranked second overall behind Canada in the history of CWG wrestling competitions, winning a total of 114 medals, including 49 gold. Canada lead the chart with 69 gold, 48 silver and 30 bronze.
Veteran Indian boxer MC Mary Kom was on Friday forced to withdraw midway through her Commonwealth Games 48kg trial after sustaining a leg injury. The six-time world champion injured herself in the first round of the 48kg semifinals. Haryana's Nitu thus advanced to the finals of the CWG trials at the Indira Gandhi International Stadium here.
