ON THE field of play, there is no question that Birmingham 2022 has been a success but for Sport England chief executive Tim Hollingsworth, it is the long-term legacy that will define these Commonwealth Games. Organised at relatively short notice after initial host Durban was forced to pull out, Birmingham has lived up to its reputation as one of Britain's youngest and most diverse cities.

On the opening night of the Birmingham Commonwealth Games, Eddie Ockenden marched into Alexander Stadium, carrying the Australian flag with the broadest of smiles. A distinguished servant of Australian hockey for 16 years, Ockenden was a popular choice for the honour. His excellence with the hockey stick and his humility away from the pitch were on display again on Monday as the Kookaburras finished the Games with a gold medal.
Mr Blue Sky beamed and the barges of Birmingham’s waterways bristled with flags of St George and other competing nations as they pootled beneath Black Sabbath Bridge.
The 2022 Commonwealth Games have officially finished with a spectacular closing ceremony taking place at Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium.

So far, Indian athletes have won 55 medals-- 18 golds, 15 silvers and 22 bronze-- at the CWG. The Boxing gold rush for India on day 10 began with Nitu Ghanghas beating the host country's Demie-Jade Rezstan 5-0 in a unanimous points decision to win gold in the women's 48kg (Minimumweight) category, India's 14th of the campaign. In the men's 48kg-51kg (Flyweight) division, Amit Panghal took the same 5-0 route displaying clear supremacy against another English boxer, Kiaran Macdonald.
BIRMINGHAM: Australia won the first women’s cricket gold medal in Commonwealth Games history on Sunday as Scotland’s Laura Muir captured the 1500m title on the final night of athletics.
