Germany’s Kamna (Bora-Hansgrohe) caught fellow escapee Lopez (Trek-Segafredo) inside the final three kilometres of the final 23km ascent before the duo shared out the spoils from a tough day in the saddle at the Rifugio Sapienza: for Kamna, a maiden Giro stage win and the blue king of the mountains jersey; for Lopez, the consolation of pink after his mistake on the final bend pretty much handed the win on a plate to his rival.

Alberto Contador expects the battle for pink to kick into life on Stage 4 of the Giro d’Italia and “irretrievable gaps” to potentially be opened up. After Monday’s rest day, the race returns with a mountain-top finish at Mount Etna.
Chris Froome and Geraint Thomas still possess “enough quality to win any race”, according to two-time Tour de France champion Alberto Contador. Froome (Israel–Premier Tech) has disappeared as a force since his career-threatening crash in 2019, while Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers) has also struggled to live up to the hype in recent seasons. Ad/> Froome won the Tour four times between 2013 and 2017, while Thomas triumphed at the 2018 edition.
