Aiden Markram might've had a cold expression on his face in the aftermath of the Proteas' fine victory in the third ODI against Australia - one he attributed to the bitterly cold snap on the Highveld - but there'll be little doubt his and his team-mates' hearts will be warm.
South Africa's spin bowlers backed up a century by Aiden Markram as the hosts ended Australia's winning streak with a 111-run victory in the third one-day international at the JB Marks Oval in Potchefstroom on Tuesday. Markram hit 102 not out in a South African total of 338 for six. South Africa survived a furious assault by David Warner and Travis Head before bowling out Australia for 227. Australia won the first two games in the five-match series after sweeping a Twenty20 series 3-0. The tourists looked on track for another win when Warner and Head thrashed 79 for the first wicket off only 48 balls.
And so, in less than 85 overs, all seems right with the world again for the Proteas.
David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne hit centuries and set up a convincing 123-run win for Australia in the second one-day international against South Africa at the Mangaung Oval on Saturday. Warner made 106 and Labuschagne 124 in an Australian total of 392 for eight after the tourists were sent in. Leg-spinner Adam Zampa took four for 48 as South Africa were bowled out for 269 in the 42nd over. Quinton de Kock (45) and skipper Temba Bavuma (46) put on 81 in nine overs to get South Africa off to a quick start before De Kock was caught and bowled by Nathan Ellis. Zampa struck twice in successive overs to dismiss Bavuma and Aiden Markram and South Africa were unable to mount a serious challenge, although Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller both made 49.
SA vs AUS, 2nd ODI Live Updates: South Africa look to bounce back as they take on Australia in the second ODI at the Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein. The visitors lead the series 1-0 after their tight three-wicket win on Thursday at the same venue. Marnus Labuschagne was the unlikely hero for Australia after batting as a concussion substitute for Cameron Green. He made 80 not out to steer Australia to an unlikely three-wicket win. For South Africa, Temba Bavuma carried his bat for an unbeaten 114 to enable South Africa to score 222 all out. (Live Scorecard)
Marnus Labuschagne came on as a concussion substitute to steer Australia to a three-wicket win over South Africa in a one-day international on Thursday, leaving Australia’s selectors with thinking to do ahead of next month’s World Cup in India.
After pulling off a 3-0 whitewash in the T20Is, Australia will now to look to assert their dominance over South Africa in ODIs, starting with the opening game later on Thursday in Bloemfontein. Australia captain Pat Cummins, who missed the T20Is due to a wrist injury, is part of the squad for the five-match series, but his participation remains unlikley. In his absence, Mitchell Marsh took the leadership role as the visitors dominated the hosts in the shortest format of the game. South Africa, on the other hand, hope that the change in format would lead to a change in fortune.
