Afghanistan put on a superb batting and bowling display to hand Pakistan a stunning eight-wicket defeat in the Cricket World Cup 2023 on Monday. Chasing a 283-run target at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, Afghanistan were lifted by Ibrahim Zadran (87), Rahmat Shah (77 not out) and Rahmanullah Gurbaz (65) as they scored 286 for 2 in 49 overs. Pakistan had made 282-7 in their 50 overs with 74 from skipper Babar Azam and 58 from opener Abdullah Shafique but the total did not prove tough enough for a clinical Afghanistan.
A Melbourne Stars side boasting Australia skipper Meg Lanning and several England internationals was bundled out for just 29 runs -- a record-low score in the women's Big Bash League. The previous low in the Twenty20 competition's eight seasons was the 66 posted by both Brisbane Heat and Hobart Hurricanes in 2017. The Stars' innings lasted just 57 legal deliveries, with no player making double figures against rampant defending champions Adelaide Strikers, who won by a crushing 148 runs.
Openers David Warner and Mitchell Marsh hit swashbuckling hundreds against a sloppy Pakistan to lift Australia to 367-9 in their Cricket World Cup 2023 clash in Bengaluru on Friday. Warner survived a leg-before appeal off the very first ball of the match and was then dropped on 10 in the fifth over, before cracking a punishing 124-ball 163 after Australia were sent in to bat on a flat Chinnaswamy Stadium pitch. Marsh, celebrating his 32nd birthday, clobbered a 108-ball 121 as the pair raced to an Australian World Cup opening stand record of 259 by the 34th over, much to the delight of a 30,000 crowd.
The Netherlands defeated South Africa by 38 runs at the Cricket World Cup on Tuesday, beating a Test-playing nation at the tournament for the first time. Chasing 246 to win from a rain-reduced 43 overs after Dutch captain Scott Edwards made a crucial 78 not out, South Africa, one of the tournament favourites, were bowled out for 207 in the shadow of the Himalayas. In November last year, the Dutch sent South Africa crashing of the T20 World Cup in Australia. The victory was the World Cup's second major shock in three days after Afghanistan defeated defending champions England on Sunday.
England achieved the unwanted record of losing to all 11 Test-playing nations at the Cricket World Cup after they were stunned by Afghanistan on Sunday. England are the first team ever to achieve this feat as they were completely outplayed by Afghanistan in the Cricket World Cup 2023 encounter in New Delhi. In the first two editions of the tournament, England lost to Australia in 1975 and then to West Indies in the 1979 final. In 1983 and 1987, they suffered losses at the hands of India and Pakistan respectively. In 1983, they were also defeated by New Zealand in a shock result.
