GENEVA: FIFA’s resale site has four tickets on sale for the World Cup final for just under $2.3 million each. The $2,299,998.85 seats for the July 19 match at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, are located behind a goal in the lower deck in block 124, row 45, seats 33-36. FIFA does not control the asking prices on its Resale/Exchange Marketplace but takes a 15 percent purchase fee from the buyer of each ticket and a 15 percent resale fee from the seller. An aisle seat 33 in block 146, row 32 of the lower deck listed as easy access standard was listed at $207,000, while a category two seat in the last row of the uppermost third deck was listed at $138,000 for block 310, row 26, seat 23. A few feet away, seat 21 has an asking price of $23,000. The lowest-priced tickets for the final listed Thursday on the Marketplace were $10,923.85 for four seats four rows from the top of the upper deck behind a goal, in block 323, row 23, seats 13-16. FIFA did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment. FIFA put new blocks of tickets on sale Wednesday on its direct tickets site.

PARIS: Italy has played down suggestions that its national team could replace Iran at the World Cup, following reports that an envoy to US President Donald Trump had asked FIFA to consider the move. US special envoy Paolo Zampolli told the Financial Times it would be a “dream” to see four-time World Cup winners Italy at the finals in the United States, Mexico and Canada despite the fact they lost in a qualification playoff last month. However, sports minister Andrea Abodi said on Thursday that a reinstatement of Italy “first, is not possible; second, is not appropriate, you qualify on the pitch,” according to Italian news agencies ANSA and AGI. That view was echoed by the president of Italy’s Olympic committee, Luciano Buonfiglio. “I would feel offended. You have to earn your place in the World Cup,” he said. The Iranian embassy to Rome responded saying that the suggestion showed US “moral bankruptcy” and that Italy did not need “political privileges” to demonstrate its football greatness. The idea was an effort to repair ties between Trump and Giorgia Meloni after the Italian prime minister fell out with the president after criticizing his attack on Pope Leo XIV over the Iran war, the FT reported. “I confirm I have suggested to Trump and (FIFA President Gianni) Infantino that Italy replace Iran at the World Cup.

GENEVA: An Iranian government spokesperson says the men’s national team are preparing for “proud and successful participation” in their World Cup games in the United States. Iran’s ability and willingness to go to the World Cup across north America starting June 11 has been unclear since the US and Israel launched military attacks Feb. 28. “The Ministry of Youth and Sports made an announcement about the full preparedness of our national soccer team for presence in the 2026 World Cup in the US, by the order of the minister,” Iranian government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohejerani told Iran’s state TV on Wednesday. FIFA has consistently said Iran will stick to the World Cup game schedule decided last December, and refused to negotiate any suggestion of playing the team’s games in Mexico. Progress was made March 31 when FIFA President Gianni Infantino went to meet Iranian soccer leaders and players in Turkiye where the team had two warmup games. Though the Iranian soccer league has shut down during the war, the team’s official Instagram account posted photos this week of a practice in Tehran. Mohejerani added Wednesday “the necessary arrangements that these dear ones need for the team’s proud and successful participation, (have been made).” Infantino promised the Iranian team three weeks ago he would help find a training camp outside of the country for the team to prepare for the World Cup.
