OUDENAARDDE: Dutch rider Mathieu van der Poel won a battle of nerves with Tadej Pogacar to claim the 273km-long Tour of Flanders raced over cobbled hills on Sunday (Apr 3).
A protester leapfrogged the barrier and ran down the finishing straight as Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Fenix) took victory at the Tour of Flanders. As all eyes were fixed on the intriguing and bizarre sprint showdown between Van der Poel and Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates), a spectator risked a serious incident by suddenly joining the action.

Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Fenix) took a heart-in-the-mouth victory at the Tour of Flanders after the most bizarre of ‘sprint’ finishes involving Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates). The duo had a huge lead in the home straight but, as Pogacar refused to do another turn, the pace almost slowed to a halt – inviting Dylan van Baarle (Ineos Grenadiers) and Valentin Madouas (Groupama-FDJ) back into the showdown.
Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) lit up the Tour of Flanders with a pulsating attack on the Oude Kwaremont. Pogacar arrived in Flanders bidding to become the first reigning Tour de France champion since Eddy Merckx in 1975 to win the Belgian Monument.

Afghanistan have appointed former Pakistan players Younis Khan and Umar Gul as batting and bowling consultants respectively for their training camp in the United Arab Emirates, the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) said. Former captain Younis retired from international cricket in 2017 and later took up coaching, working briefly as the batting coach of Pakistan. Gul retired in 2020 before taking up a bowling coach role with Pakistan Super League team Quetta Gladiators the following year.
