Williams will resume her quest for an elusive 24th Grand Slam singles title at this month's Wimbledon after making her long-awaited return to the Tour when she competes in doubles at the Eastbourne International. The former world number one has not played competitive tennis since limping out of last year's first-round match at the grasscourt major -- where she has won seven of her 23 titles -- in tears due to a leg injury. The 40-year-old has slipped down the rankings to 1208th and needed a wildcard from the All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC), which organises Wimbledon, to compete in the main draw of women's singles. But Williams will first team up with Tunisian world number four Ons Jabeur for the doubles event at Eastbourne which gets underway this weekend. "SW and SW19. It's a date. 2022 See you there," Williams wrote on Instagram on Tuesday, referring to the postcode of the AELTC which hosts Wimbledon.
Manchester United's Hannibal Mejbri won his first international trophy with Tunisia on Monday night.
We now know the 32 nations that will compete at the 2022 Qatar World Cup this winter.
BERLIN: Ons Jabeur started her grass-court season with a win as she cruised past Karolina Muchova 6-3, 6-3 at the Berlin Open on Tuesday, while Andrea Petkovic delighted the home fans by upsetting Garbiñe Muguruza.Playing for the first time since a shock first-round loss at the French Open, the fourth-ranked Jabeur put in an assured performance as she saved all four of the break points she faced against her Czech opponent. The top-seeded Jabeur, who reached the quarterfinals at Wimbledon last year, will next play US qualifier Alycia Parks. The Tunisian will also team up with the returning Serena Williams to play doubles in Eastbourne next week.“Pretty excited to play doubles with Serena,” Jabeur said. “When I got the news, I was over the moon.
LIVERPOOL: Darwin Nunez vowed to write himself into Liverpool’s history after securing a move from Benfica on Tuesday for a fee that could rise to a club record 100 million euros (£85 million, $105 million). The Champions League finalists have splashed an initial 75 million euros on the 22-year-old, with an extra 25 million in performance-related add-ons according to figures released by Benfica. That could take Nunez’s move beyond the £75 million Liverpool paid for Virgil Van Dijk in January 2018 and make him the fifth most expensive transfer in Premier League history.
The 23-time Grand Slam singles champion, who has not played since suffering an injury during her first-round match at Wimbledon 12 months ago, has plummeted to 1,208 in the world rankings.
