La Copa de África de 2000 se celebró por primera vez a caballo entre dos países, Nigeria y Ghana. Con sus peculiaridades, ya era un campeonato muy asentado, tres años más antiguo que la propia Eurocopa (la primera edición data de 1957, si bien con solo tres participantes, y la ganó Egipto). En Europa tenía bastante seguimiento, sobre todo en Francia, donde jugaban ya entonces muchas estrellas africanas procedentes, claro, de los países francófonos. Pero no solo allí. Muchos otros países europeos tenían ya jugadores africanos o enviaban observadores a buscar nuevas figuras.
