India skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to bat against Sri Lanka in Saturday's pink ball Test in Bangalore with a series sweep in view.
Mayank Agarwal's homecoming did not go according to plan as a big mix-up with captain Rohit Sharma ended his first Test match innings at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru for 4. Confusion reigned supreme in the fourth ball of the second over of the second and final Test match against Sri Lanka. Left-arm seamer Vishwa Fernando got the pink ball to nip back slightly. Mayank got himself in a bit of a tangle and the ball appeared to have hit his pad first. The Sri Lankans went up in a big appeal but the umpire did not seem convinced. While all this was happening, Mayank tried to sneak in a single without noticing that Praveen Jayawickrama, who was moving in from point to covers, had almost collected the ball. Rohit at the other end sent Mayank back but the right-hander had charged too far down the wicket. Jayawickrama just lobbed it back towards Sri Lanka keeper Niroshan Dickwella with Mayank having no chance to return to the crease on time.
BENGALURU : Indian captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to bat first in the second and final match of the two-test series against Sri Lanka on Saturday, a day-night match in Bengaluru.
IND vs SL, 2nd Test, Day 1 Live Updates: India captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to bat first against Sri Lanka in the second Test at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. The hosts brought Axar Patel in the XI in place of Jayant Yadav. Sri Lanka, on the other hand, have given a go to Kusal Mendis and Praveen Jayawickrama in place of Pathum Nissanka and Lahiru Kumara. The match is a day-night affair and India will look to clean sweep the visitors, having won the first Test in Mohali by an innings and 222 runs. India have won both of their home day/night Tests -- against Bangladesh and England, respectively -- and will look to make that three against the Lankans, who are the only team to win an away pink-ball Test. Ravindra Jadeja climbed to the top of the ICC player Test rankings for all-rounders with a sparkling performance against Sri Lanka in the opening Test in Mohali. The 33-year-old was plain brilliant with both the bat and ball as India thrashed Sri Lanka by an innings and 222 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. After his all-round heroics, the Sri Lankan team will already be wary of Jadeja and his record in Bengaluru will be making them even more nervous.
India face Sri Lanka in the second Test match of their two-game series on Friday, at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. In what will also be a day-night affair, the Bengaluru Test has also been allowed to have 100 percent crowd capacity by the state association due to a decline in Covid-19 cases. India won the first Test match by an innings and 222 runs with Ravindra Jadeja smashing a ton and also took nine wickets in the match. The all-rounder ended up winning the Man of the Match award for his display. India will be aiming for a clean sweep in the second Test. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka will be hoping to end the series on a positive note.
Chasing an elusive international hundred for 28 months now, Virat Kohli would hope for a turnaround at his 'spiritual home' when India take on an under-prepared and injury-hit Sri Lanka in the second Test, with the action unfolding under flood lights, in Bengaluru from Saturday. Interestingly, the last time Kohli reached a three-figure mark, it was a 'Pink Ball' game in which India thrashed Bangladesh by an innings and 46 runs in Kolkata, back in November 2019. He had scored 136 back then. The former India skipper has taken strike in 28 innings since then but a Test hundred has remained elusive. The 33-year-old has got a 50-plus score only six times with highest being a knock of 79 against South Africa in Cape Town in January this year.
Yet, the format has yielded its place at the top to the slam-bang version which now fills the international calendar, thanks to increased spectator interest. Day-night Test matches were one of the solutions introduced in 2015 to revive its fortunes. Relatively new, the format has added some zing to the five-day version, since all 18 matches played under lights so far have yielded results. Indeed, one of the flip sides of Test matches under lights is that none of them have been played on all five days. Match No. 19, between India and Sri Lanka, which gets underway at the M Chinnaswamy stadium here on Saturday, could well be another bar in that statistic.
