Persistent rain and heavy winds left behind a trail of destruction at the Galle International Stadium on Thursday, delaying the start of play on Day 2 of the ongoing first Test between Sri Lanka and Australia. An enclosure in the stadium collapsed due to the wind, while a glass panel broke and fell on the ground. Thankfully, though, nobody was hurt in the stadium, according to reports. The rain has delayed the start of play by more than two hours.

Pakistan Cricket Board chief Ramiz Raja has given a strong reaction to a recent statement made by opening batter Ahmed Shehzad. The player has been out of favour for a long period now, and way back in 2016, then coach Waqar Younis had advised him to return to domestic cricket. The 30-year-old Shehzad reacted to the report saying it dented his career. Shehzad has played 13 Tests, 81 ODIs and 59 T20Is. He last played for the national team in October, 2019 in a T20I against Sri Lanka in Lahore.

Australia will begin Day 2 at 98/3 after having bowled the hosts out for 212. Nathan Lyon's 20th 5-wicket haul helped Australia bowl Sri Lanka out for a modest total despite Niroshan Dickwella's counter-attacking 58. The visitors then began strongly with the bat, but soon lost opener David Warner for 25 off 24 to Ramesh Mendis. Mendis then had his second wicket when he dismissed Marnus Labuschagne for 13. Nathan Lyon's five-for helped Australia bowl out Sri Lanka for 212, before the hosts hit back with three wickets in a fast-moving opening Test on Wednesday. The tourists reached 98 for three at stumps after Sri Lankan spinner Ramesh Mendis struck twice, including David Warner's key wicket for 25, on a turning pitch at the picturesque Galle stadium. Steve Smith was run out on six after a mix up with opener Usman Khawaja, unbeaten on 47, and returned to the pavilion waving his hands in dismay.
