The much-anticipated Asia Cup 2023 will kick-start from Wednesday with co-hosts Pakistan squaring off against Nepal in Multan. Before the match, an opening ceremony will be held in the Multan to mark the beginning of the continental event. Won by Sri Lanka a year ago over the T20 format, this year the Asia Cup reverts to 50 overs. It is also a final chance for Asia's cricketing giants to size each other up before October's World Cup in India. The top two teams from each group advance to the Super Four with the leading two in the standings contesting the final in Colombo on September 17.
The mouth-watering clash between the arch-rivals India and Pakistan in Asia Cup 2023 will be played on September 2 in Kandy, Sri Lanka. All cricket fans around the world are eagerly waiting to witness the historic rivalry unfolding for the first time since the 2022 T20 World Cup. In Asia Cup last year, both the teams met each other twice where the Rohit Sharma-led side emerged victorious in the group stage, the Pakistan team thrashed them in the Super 4 stage by 5 wickets.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) boss has confirmed that The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Roger Binny is set to travel across the border to attend the opening ceremony of the Asia Cup, which begins on August 30. While PCB remains the host for this edition's Asia Cup, the tournament will only partly be held in Pakistan, with the majority of the matches scheduled to take place in Sri Lanka. Such a format was set up over the BCCI's reluctance to send its players to Pakistan for the tournament, over security issues. But, the BCCI president Roger Binny and vice-president Rajiv Shukla have accepted the Pakistan board's proposal of hosting them in Multan on the opening day of the tournament.
India wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant is slowly and steadily working his way back to full fitness before he takes the international cricket by storm with his hard-hitting once again, as he was seen cycling in a recent video on Monday. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had on July 21 issued an update on the recovery of its key players like Pant, Jasprit Bumrah, Rahul and Shreyas. Rahul, along with Iyer have resumed batting practice in nets and are also undergoing strength and fitness drills. Taking to Instagram, Pant shared a video of him cycling and was clearly having a nice time. "Grip. Twist. Paddle. Good vibes only," said the caption of Pant's post.
COLOMBO : Sri Lanka left-arm seamer Dilshan Madushanka will miss the Asia Cup due to injury in yet another blow to the co-hosts' title defence, according to media reports.
The world governing body FIFA on Monday lifted its suspension of the Sri Lanka Football Federation (FFSL). On January 21 this year FIFA had banned FFSL for violations of FIFA rules in administration. FIFA Secretary General Fatma Samoura conveyed in a letter to FFSL that the FIFA bureau had decided Sunday “to lift the suspension of the FFSL with immediate effect”. FIFA says the scheduled FFSL election on September 29 would be closely monitored by them while lifting the suspension.
Asia's cricket giants India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka will get a final chance to size each other up before October's 50-over World Cup when the Asia Cup begins on Wednesday. Fiery rivals India and Pakistan could clash as many as three times if they go all the way in the six-nation continental championship. Pakistan and Sri Lanka are co-hosts, a hybrid model agreed after World Cup hosts India refused to tour Pakistan, with the final on September 17 in Colombo.
