The Asia Cup, once considered a mini-version of the World Cup, has gradually turned into a preparatory platform for the World Cup. Whichever World Cup is being held that year, be it in the ODI format or T20I, the Asia Cup is molded into the same format. Last year, when the Asia Cup was held in the UAE, it was the Sri Lanka cricket team that emerged triumphant, winning the title in the T20 format. But, this time around, the Asian sides will battle it out in the 50-over format of the game. But, why is it so?

Asia Cup 2023: Pakistan To Take On Nepal In Sweltering Multan

Pakistan will begin their campaign in the Asia Cup on Wednesday taking on Nepal in the city's sweltering heat as multi-team international cricket returns to the country after nearly 15 years. It has been a long, rough road for Pakistan cricket ever since the militant attack on the Sri Lankan team in Lahore in March, 2009. Following the attack, not only did Pakistan lose the Champions Trophy hosting rights but also its share of the World Cup matches in 2011. With the International Cricket Council (ICC) and member nations reluctant to visit the country because of security reasons, Pakistan went without an international game at home for nearly eight years against top-tier teams.

Sri Lanka have been hit by injuries to key bowlers as they named their 15-member squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2023 on Tuesday. Leg-spinning all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga is among four key Sri Lankan players who will miss the upcoming Asia Cup due to injury. Pacers Dushmantha Chameera, Lahiru Madushanka and Lahiru Kumara are also missing from the squad due to injuries. Binura Fernando and Pramod Madushan were a late addition to the squad to replace the injured players. Kusal Perera making a comeback after a hiatus of two years from the ODI squad, is still recovering from flu according to a statement from Sri Lankan Cricket and will join the rest of the squad once he recovers.

Rohit Sharma traded caution with aggression to add a different dimension to his batting and the Indian skipper is happy with the results even if it means not getting those daddy hundreds. The captain largely believes that this is because of the high-risk game he has adopted. "My (ODI) strike-rate (during this period) has increased but the average has dipped a bit. This is exactly what our batting coach (Vikram Rathour) was telling me, ‘You have scored big runs because of the way you batted all these years and in the last few years, it (big runs) has not happened because you are taking risk," the skipper added.

Team India is preparing for the Asia Cup 2023 campaign in the training camp organised at Alur on the outskirts of Bengaluru in Karnataka. The Asia Cup is set to start on August 30 where Pakistan will take on Nepal in Multan, Pakistan. India will play their opening match against Pakistan on September 2 at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Kandy, Sri Lanka. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on their social media account on X posted a video of Indian players training hard for the upcoming tournament.
