NEW DELHI : Former India opener Gautam Gambhir was appointed head coach of the country's cricket team on Tuesday, succeeding former teammate Rahul Dravid in what is considered one of the most challenging jobs in the game.
Hardik Pandya rose two places to go level with Sri Lankan star Wanindu Hasaranga as the top-ranked men's T20I all-rounder on Wednesday, as per the ICC official website. The all-rounder, who made a big contribution in the final with the crucial wickets of Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller, had a good tournament with bat and ball and became the first Indian man to reach No.1 in the category. Hardik Pandya made impactful cameos down the order with the bat and made breakthroughs with the ball when the team needed him to. He finished with 144 runs at a batting strike rate of over 150 and also took 11 wickets.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Tuesday named World Cup-winning opening batter Gautam Gambhir as the head coach of the Indian men's cricket team. It was a much anticipated news as Gambhir was the front runner to replace ex-India head coach Rahul Dravid in the post. Dravid's tenure had come to an end after India's T20 World Cup triumph last month. Gambhir was the not the only candidate for the role of India head coach as the BCCI also interviewed ex-India batter WV Raman. The board eventually selected Gambhir for the post.
Pakistan captain Babar Azam, wicket-keeper Mohammad Rizwan and pace spearhead Shaheen Shah Afridi are yet to get No Objection Certificates (NOCs) from the nation's Cricket Board (PCB) to participate in the Global T20 Canada league. The PCB on Tuesday issued NOCs to 12 players for different leagues but the trio, who are in the top bracket of central contracts, is still waiting for clearance. "The PCB is not comfortable with the status of the Global League and has sought some information from the organisers and ICC, which is why the issuance of NOCs has been delayed," a PCB official said.
The India's tour of Sri Lanka will be starting from July 26 onwards, with the tour starting with a three-match T20I series. The tour will also consist of a three-match ODI series, which will kickstart from August 1 onwards. The Pallekele International Stadium will be hosting the T20I leg of the series while the R Premadasa is getting to host the 50-over matches, announced BCCI. The first T20I will take place on July 26, followed by the second one on July 27 and the final one on July 29.
Gautam Gambhir's much-hyped appointment as head coach of the Indian cricket team was made official on Tuesday, with the former opener replacing Rahul Dravid for the top job. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) also announced that Gambhir will join the team for the upcoming white-ball tour of Sri Lanka later this month. BCCI's Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), comprising Ashok Malhotra, Jatin Paranjape, and Sulakshana Naik, unanimously recommended Gambhir's name for the head coach job.
Veteran Afghanistan all-rounder Mohammad Nabi is not thinking about hanging up his international boots soon and hopes to continue playing for the country till the 2026 T20 World Cup, scheduled to be hosted jointly by India and Sri Lanka. Nabi, who is leading Dambulla Sixers in the ongoing Lanka Premier League (LPL), wants to prolong his international career in the T20Is. The 39-year-old has planned to take a call on his ODI future after the Champions Trophy, adding that he wants to bid adieu the international cricket following the next T20 World Cup.
