Just when it seemed to have gone away for good, the European Super League (ESL) is back in the news again.
There were jitters, of course. Considering all that happened, how could there not be?
The current European Commission has pledged to reduce the number of people living in poverty by 15 million by 2030 – but due to the global pandemic, the war in Ukraine, inflation and rising energy prices, the trend has actually gone the other way, with the past three years seeing the number of people in poverty rising by 3 million.

Mikel Arteta said it is vital to look after fans as Premier League leaders Arsenal confirmed on Friday they will not be involved in a revised European Super League proposal. The Gunners were among a group of 12 clubs, including six from the Premier League, who signed up to a breakaway league in 2021, though the project quickly collapsed. On Thursday the European Court of Justice ruled that UEFA had broken EU law by abusing its "dominant position" in European football to stifle the upstart league.
Promoters of the breakaway European Super League on Thursday announced plans for a new 64-team men's tournament following a ruling from the European Court of Justice that stated that Uefa and Fifa broke the law by blocking a rival competition.
Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis welcomed the European Court of Justice ruling on the Super League project, saying UEFA and FIFA do not understand the business of the sport and the need to grow club revenues.
Arsenal can end their winless streak at Liverpool when both sides meet this weekend, which would help them preserve their spot at the top of the Premier League, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said on Friday.
