Indian athlete Mayank Chaphekar's landmark Asian Games 2023 campaign ended in the semi-finals of the men's individual modern pentathlon event in Hangzhou on Sunday. He failed to make it to the final after finishing 13th in the semi-finals with total of 1005 points. With eight victories and 20 defeats, Mayank Chaphekar had finished 28th among 29th athletes in the fencing ranking round with 166 points.
India narrowly missed out on a medal in Asian Games fencing when Taniksha Khatri lost to world No 2 Man Wai Vivian Kong of Hong Kong 7-15 in individual epee quarterfinal in Hangzhou on Sunday. Khatri, who won her three pool matches to qualify for the knockout round, had seven touches but her opponent was superior and sealed the issue to make the semifinals. A quarterfinal win would have guaranteed at least a bronze medal for the Indian who out-performed her teammate Ena Arora by just four points (15-11) in the round of 32.
Japan pushed Indian men's volleyball team out of the medal race at the Asian Games with a fluent 3-0 win in a cross-group match in Hangzhou on Sunday. Keihan Takahashi emerged as star performer for Japan by logging 21 points, playing a key role in his team's 25-16 25-18 25-17 victory in one hour and 11 minutes. Erin Varghese was top scorer for India with eight points.
Two-time world champion Nikhat Zareen stamped her authority in the women's 50kg by registering a dominant 5-0 win over Vietnam's Thi Tam Nguyen while Preeti Pawar (54kg) moved to the quarterfinals of the Asian Games on Sunday. In a rematch of March's world championship final, Zareen once again defeated two-time Asian Champion Nguyen by unanimous decision to move to the pre-quarters. Putting up a dominating show, talented Indian boxer Preeti notched up a an RSC win over Jordan's Silina Alhasanat. One of only four boxers to not get a first round bye in the 50kg event despite being the reigning world champion, Zareen controlled the proceedings from the word go.

The 19th Asian Games will get underway on Saturday, September 23 in Hangzhou, China. A total of 45 countries and territories from the continent will take part in 61 disciplines across 40 sports. India have sent a record contingent of 921 to take part in the Asian Games, including 655 athletes, 260 coaches and support staff. While multiple events have already kicked off since September 19, the opening ceremony on Saturday will officially mark the start of the 19th Asian Games. The opening ceremony has been primarily divided into three components, namely the artistic program, athlete parade of all participating nations, and the ceremonial lighting of the flame.
