Kevin Anderson retires at 35

Former Wimbledon and US Open finalist Kevin Anderson announced his retirement on Tuesday aged 35, bringing to an end a career that showed immense promise but was derailed by injuries. The big-serving South African, who stands 6'8" and towered over his opponents, achieved a career high ranking of fifth in the world in 2018 before sliding out of the top 100 following a succession of knee, shoulder and ankle injuries. "I've experienced so many different challenges and emotions, this sport can be exhilarating and at the same time lonely. I've had ups and downs, but I wouldn't change it for anything," he said in a statement on Twitter. "My journey helped me become the man who I am today. Today I finally arrived at the difficult decision to retire from professional tennis. "As a kid, my dad used to tell me that success isn't defined by results, but by the effort and sacrifice you make along the way in becoming the best you can be. I gave it my best." Having come through the US college system, Anderson turned professional in 2007.

IPL 2022: The wicket helped us, says pacer Sandeep Sharma after Punjab Kings' win over Gujarat Titans

Punjab Kings pacer Sandeep Sharma said that the DY Patil track, which was "sticky" in the beginning helped their bowlers in the IPL game against Gujarat Titans, which they won by eight wickets. First South African pacer Kagiso Rabada snared four wickets to restrict Gujarat Titans to a below-par 143 for eight and then Punjab rode on flamboyant opener Shikhar Dhawan's unbeaten 62 to chase the target with 24 balls to spare. "Today the wicket (the track) also helped us. It was sticky in the beginning, which helped the new ball to move and the ball was holding on the wicket," Sharma, who returned with figures of 0/17, said at the post-match press conference.

New Zealand expect steely England under new skipper Ben Stokes

New Zealand expect Ben Stokes's leadership to galvanise England but they intend to make life as difficult as they can for the new skipper in the upcoming Test series, head coach Gary Stead said. New Zealand-born Stokes replaced Joe Root as Test captain last week, with England seeking a swift turnaround under the talismanic all-rounder after managing only one win in their last 17 matches. The combative 30-year-old's first assignment will be to turn the tables on New Zealand in the three-Test series starting at Lord's on June 2, a year after England lost 1-0 to the 'Black Caps' while Stokes was taking a break from cricket. "Look, I imagine that he will bring - there will be an immediate steel to their group," Stead told reporters on Wednesday.
