NEW YORK — Ukrainian Daria Snigur's first career win on the WTA Tour was a big one.
Daniil Medvedev explained to Eurosport why he asked for an ice bag to put on his head late on during his straight sets win over Stefan Kozlov. The world No. 1 dominated his American opponent, hitting 36 winners and breaking seven times, as he advanced into the second round where he will play Arthur Rinderknech.
World number one Daniil Medvedev opened his US Open title defence by walloping American Stefan Kozlov 6-2 6-4 6-0 in sweltering conditions on Arthur Ashe Stadium. The Russian had an inconsistent run-up to Flushing Meadows but was back to top form on the court where he won his maiden grand slam title a year ago, sending across 10 aces and neutralising Kozlov's serve. The pair traded breaks early in the first set before Medvedev got his motor running, clinching the next four games as Kozlov won fewer than half of his first-serve points. Kozlov was no match for Medvedev's raw power in the second set. The American scraped his wrist and knee after he dived to retrieve the ball, but ended up falling to the ground heavily in the ninth game that saw Medvedev break him to love. He called on the trainer to tend to the injuries but Medvedev showed no mercy as he raced through the final set like a bullet train in just 27 minutes to set up a meeting with Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech in the second round.

World number one Medvedev, bidding to become the first man to successfully defend the US Open since Roger Federer in 2008, eased into the second round with a 6-2, 6-4, 6-0 win in 2hrs 1min. Victory was sweet for Medvedev, who revealed he had regularly struggled to beat Kozlov when the two played at junior level. "He was almost impossible to beat," said the Russian, citing one encounter where his opponent "destroyed me."
Daniil Medvedev got his US Open title defence off to a smooth start with a straight-sets victory over unseeded American Stefan Kozlov. The Russian faced a determined fight from the 24-year-old at times, but comfortably won 6-2 6-4 6-0 in just over two hours, hitting 36 winners in the process.
