Ukraine's ambassador at the United Nations says that "there is no purgatory for war criminals, they go straight to hell."
Russia's invasion of Ukraine continues to stir tension in the tennis world, and Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka said Friday that it's not only Ukrainian players who are feeling the strain. "Of course it's a lot of tension between us," Australian Open champion Sabalenka said after beating Maria Sakkari to reach the final of the combined WTA and ATP Masters 1000 in the California desert. But, she added, "I still have this belief that I did nothing bad to Ukrainians -- not me, not Russian athletes."
World number two Aryna Sabalenka said the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) was doing a good job of supporting players from Ukraine, Russia and Belarus amid tensions in the locker room following Moscow's invasion of Ukraine last year.
BERLIN : Germany's Olympic committee (DOSB) said on Friday it was in favour of maintaining a ban of Russian and Belarusian athletes but opposed any plans to boycott the Paris 2024 Olympics over their participation.
Russian and Belarusian boxers on Thursday competed under their respective national flags at the IBA Women's World Championships since Moscow's invasion of Ukraine last year. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) had issued sanctions, including a ban on national flags, symbols and anthems, against the athletes from the two countries after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine last year and Belarus' assistance in the attack. Athletes from the two countries were allowed to compete in events but without their national flags or anthems. They took part as neutral athletes.
Negotiations are currently under way to renew the UN-brokered agreement allowing Ukraine to export its cereals via the Black Sea. Last year, the deal helped the country to export nearly three quarters of what it would in an average year – albeit at a much higher cost – and brought relief to global food markets that are highly dependent on Ukrainian grain. But this year, there's a question mark over how much Ukraine's farmers will be able to produce.
NEW DELHI : Megan de Cler's participation in the ongoing women's boxing world championships, defying a boycott by the Dutch federation, and the withdrawal of Kosovo's Donjeta Sadiku have added to controversy at the event in New Delhi.
WTA chief executive Steve Simon says the governing body are doing all they can to help players from Ukraine. Players from Russia and Belarus have played under a neutral flag since the start of the war in February 2022. Ad Anastasia Potapova was warned by the WTA for wearing a Spartak Moscow football shirt before her match against Jessica Pegula at Indian Wells this week.
