Bairstow celebrates 'good day' as England declare on 398-8 against Australia in first Ashes Test
England declared on 398-8 and left Australia 14 without loss after a promising start to the Ashes in Edgbaston. Former captain Joe Root was the star of the home side’s innings as he arrived with England at 176-5 and in trouble, to bat through until current skipper Ben Stokes’ declaration — the earliest in the series’ history. Ad Root hit a century of 121 alongside Jonny Bairstow, who plundered his total at a run a ball, and there were useful efforts from the recalled, Moeen Ali, Stuart Broad and Ollie Robinson.
