Exuding confidence, Pakistan skipper Babar Azam on Monday said the team's players are driven by a strong "hunger" for success as they set their sights on clinching the coveted Asia Cup and World Cup titles. Fresh from their 4-1 home series win over New Zealand, Pakistan are currently in pursuit of the top spot in ODI rankings. They may very well dethrone Australia as the world's No 1 side with a 3-0 whitewash over Afghanistan in their Asia Cup build-up series beginning in Sri Lanka on Tuesday.
The Indian cricket board on Monday officially turned down the request of the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) to change the ICC World Cup 2023 schedule. The HCA had appealed to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for a change in schedule after the local police authorities expressed their reservations about deploying adequate personnel on back-to-back match days. "BCCI secretary Jay Shah held a meeting with HCA officials in Delhi after the Asia Cup team selection meeting (for which the secretary is convenor) and the state unit was categorically told that no changes would be entertained after a revised schedule was issued on August 9," a BCCI source informed.
The entire coaching staff of Pakistan men's hockey team was reportedly sacked by country's sports board-run committee after it failed reach the semi-final of the recently-concluded Asian Champions Trophy in India. Shahnaz Sheikh has been named the head coach but the move has courted controversy with the person in question being a part of the Pakistan Sports Board run committee that apparently issued 'Pink Slips' to Rehan Butt, Muhammad Saqlain, Haseem Khan and Muhammad Ghafoor, who were all in Chennai for the Asian Champions Trophy in Chennai.
Former Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Najam Sethi has taken a dig at the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) over reports of another change in the ODI World Cup schedule. While the fixtures for the marquee tournament, which will beging in India from October 5, were released last month, the BCCI and ICC decided to reschedule nine matches, including the blockbuster clash between India and Pakistan. The fixture, which was scheduled to be played in Ahmedabad on October 15, will now be played a day earlier.
The Indian cricket team's Asia Cup 2023 squad had three big names returning after injury break. Jasprit Bumrah, currently leading India in the Ireland T20I series, made a comeback while KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer too made comebacks. However, there was no place for India spinner Yuzvendra Chahal, who has been a regular part of the Indian limited overs sides in recent times. While India captain Rohit Sharma and BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar announced the squads in a press conference on Monday, official broadcasters of Asia Cup - Star Sports - showed the full squad minutes before the official announcement.
