Ahead of the ICC Men's Champions Trophy 2025, Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya recalled the two maximums slammed by stalwart batter Virat Kohli on the bowling of Pakistan's right-arm seamer Haris Rauf on the last two balls of the penultimate (19th) over during the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2022 clash at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Australia. Virat Kohli played an unbeaten knock of 82 runs off 53 balls in the match in front of a crowd of 90,000 people. He scored two magnificent sixes on the last two balls of the penultimate over which was bowled by right-arm seamer Haris Rauf and brought the Men in Blue back into the game.
After recovering from a left hamstring injury, right-arm seamer Gerald Coetzee made a comeback to the national team as South Africa announced the squad for the ODI tri-series in Pakistan. Rob Walter, South Africa's white-ball coach, named a 12-man squad for the first match of the series, including Coetzee, who has recovered from an injury setback. Coetzee played his last match for South Africa before the injury setback against Sri Lanka in the first match of a two-match Test series on November 27, 2024, as per the ICC.
The dress rehearsal for the Champions Trophy starts for the Indian cricket team with the three-ODI series against England. There is a lot of intrigue surrounding the playing XI, especially with big concerns over availability of Jasprit Bumrah (picked for only the third ODI earlier) for the Champions Trophy. Mohammed Shami and Kuldeep Yadav are returning from injury while there is still no clarity over who will be the No. 1 wicketkeeper.
India are all set to take on England in a three-match ODI series, starting February 6 in Nagpur. The visitors have announced their playing XI for the first game that is set to take place at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium. The biggest highlight of the squad is that veteran batter Joe Root has been recalled into the team. It is a long-awaited return for Root, whose last match in the format was at the 2023 Cricket World Cup. Root was not included in England's T20I squad against India that was held before their upcoming ODI series against the same opponent.
England batsman Joe Root will make his first ODI appearance since 2023 after being named in the team to face India in the opening match of the series in Nagpur on Thursday.
India's only representative in the ICC Elite Panel of Umpires, Nitin Menon, has opted out of officiating in the Champions Trophy in Pakistan this month due to personal reasons. The ICC on Wednesday announced a list of 15 match officials, including three match referees and 12 umpires for the marquee tournament, scheduled to commence in Karachi on February 19 with the final on March 9.
It hasn't quite gone the way England would have liked but skipper Jos Buttler on Wednesday said the ongoing tour of India is "as good a preparation as you can have" for this month's Champions Trophy given the similarities in conditions with Pakistan where his team will be based for the event. Buttler also believes that veteran batter Joe Root will play a pivotal role in both the ODI series against India, starting Thursday, and the upcoming Champions Trophy, given his experience.
