Nepal's high-profile cricketer Sandeep Lamichhane on Wednesday claimed that the US embassy has denied him visa for the upcoming T20 World Cup, where he was hoping to make a comeback to international cricket following his acquittal in a rape case. In a huge setback to his career, Lamichhane, the only cricketer from Nepal to have played in IPL, was arrested in September 2022 on allegations of raping an 18-year-old girl. He was later released on bail but remained suspended from domestic and international cricket.
West Indies opener Brandon King will lead the Caribbean squad in their upcoming T20I series against South Africa, as their full-time skipper Rovman Powell will take part in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 playoffs with the Rajasthan Royals (RR). Powell is one of many players who will be busy playing in IPL 2024 or rested before taking part in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024. For example, Andre Russell (Kolkata Knight Riders), Shimron Hetmyer (Rajasthan Royals), Alzarri Joseph (Royal Challengers Bengaluru) and Sherfane Rutherford (KKR) will stay in India for the T20 tournament.
India will take on Bangladesh in their T20 World Cup warm-up fixture in the USA on June 1, the International Cricket Council announced on Friday. The venue and time of India's fixture is yet to be announced. Seventeen of the 20 teams will play warm-up games slated from May 27 till June 1 across the USA and Trinidad and Tobago, the ICC stated. South Africa will be playing an intra-squad match on May 29 in Florida.
The Patan High Court on Wednesday acquitted Nepal cricketer Sandeep Lamichhane in the rape case after the Kathmandu District Court sentenced him eight years in jail in January, reports stated. Sandeep is now available for the T20 World Cup squad after he was found innocent. However, Nepal has already announced the 15-player squad led by Rohit Paudel but with the ICC rule of allowing the teams to make changes to their squad until May 25 it is certain that Lamichhane might get picked. According to local media reports, the court found Lamichhane innocent of raping a woman identified as Gushala-26 in a hotel in Tilganga on August 21, 2022.
