FIFA on Saturday warned against what it called a “concerted and ongoing effort” to undermine President Gianni Infantino, saying attempts to challenge his leadership must follow the governing body’s statutes and democratic procedures.The statement came amid an increasingly bitter standoff over Infantino’s leadership following the collapse of his proposal to raise about $4.2 billion by selling a stake in the commercial rights of the World Cup and other tournaments.The plan triggered criticism from UEFA, national associations and senior FIFA officials, led to calls for Infantino to resign and prompted a crisis meeting in Morocco this week at which FIFA’s leadership reaffirmed its support for the president.FIFA did not identify those it said were seeking to undermine Infantino or specify which reports or allegations it was referring to.The statement followed reports by The Daily Telegraph about payments made by UEFA to a former employee during Infantino’s time as the European governing body’s general secretary, allegations he has denied and that FIFA has rejected as unfounded.“Those who do not have the support of FIFA’s Member Associations should not seek to achieve through allegation, insinuation or misinformation what they cannot achieve through FIFA’s established democratic processes,” FIFA said.It said recent reporting had included “unsubstantiated assertions and demonstrably false claims” concerning FIFA and its president, adding that it would challenge inaccurate or misleading reports “directly and vigorously.”FIFA added it would not support, facilitate or tolerate any process concerning the election of its president that was inconsistent with its statutes, democratic procedures and governance framework.“
JOHANNESBURG: Algeria came from behind to beat Ivory Coast 2-1 in Casablanca on Saturday and reach for the first time the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) semifinals and the World Cup. Ines Konan put the Ivorians ahead on 29 minutes, but they were reduced to 10 players before half-time in the quarter-final when teenager N’Sira Ouedraogo was sent off. Algeria struck twice within six minutes just before and after the hour mark through substitute Ines Khiri and Amira Braham to turn the match in favor of the north Africans. Between the Algerian goals, Ivory Coast squandered a chance to regain the lead when Rebecca Elloh struck the post from a penalty. Algeria will face giant killers Malawi or Ghana, who meet on Sunday, in the WAFCON semifinals. The draw for the 32-nation World Cup in Brazil is set for next year. The red-carding of 18-year-old Ouedraogo, for kicking Algeria goalkeeper Chloe N’Gazi in the face, proved pivotal as her team lost the ascendancy they established during the opening half. After barely threatening to score during the first 45 minutes, Algeria took control after the break and created numerous chances. Later on Saturday, hosts Morocco face South Africa in the second quarter-final in Rabat.

JOHANNESBURG: Ghana claimed the last quarter-finals place in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after drawing 1-1 with Mali in Rabat on Thursday. The Black Queens began the Group D match knowing a point would suffice as their goal difference was superior to that of the Female Eagles. Cameroon won the group with seven points after drawing 1-1 with debutants Cape Verde. Ghana and Mali finished with four points each and Cape Verde secured one. Ghana, three times runners-up in the marquee African women’s football competition, face giant killers Malawi on Sunday in the last quarter-final. Hosts Morocco play South Africa and the Ivory Coast meet Algeria on Saturday and the other Sunday fixture pits title-holders and record 10-time champions Nigeria against Cameroon. The winning quarter-finalists qualify for the 2027 World Cup in Brazil.
PARIS: Pressure built on FIFA president Gianni Infantino on Thursday over his canceled plan to bring private finance into football’s World Cup, with European governing body UEFA reiterating a threat to boycott tournaments. The 56-year-old Swiss official has also been criticized by South American body CONMEBOL. But he did get backing from the Confederation of African Football (CAF). Infantino received the “full support” of senior FIFA directors at an emergency meeting in Morocco on Wednesday but UEFA released a blunt statement in response. UEFA’s initial threat issued last Thursday to boycott FIFA competitions is said to have been pivotal in forcing Infantino to shelve the private investment deal. Calls for him to step down had grown since he abandoned it last Saturday. FIFA said it could raise up to $4.2 billion based on a valuation of $20 billion for a new commercial subsidiary, called the FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), which it proposed would run events such as the World Cup and Club World Cup.
