The Pakistan football team got off to a horror start in the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Championship, losing to arch-rivals India 0-4. It was India captain Sunil Chhetri who netted a hat-trick while Udanta Singh bagged a solitary goal in the rout. While there's no denying that India dominated Pakistan all throughout the 90 minutes, the visitors put a part of the blame for their defeat on the delayed arrival for the match. Pakistan coach Torben Witajewski feels the team's visa and ticketing issue played a big role in their performance against India.
It was not the build-up the Pakistan football team would have anticipated ahead of its SAFF Championship opener against hosts India, with more than half of side arriving here only six hours ahead of the tie on Wednesday due to unavailability of tickets on a single flight. The bizarre chain of events was set off after the Pakistan team arrived in Mumbai from Mauritius at 1:00 am on Wednesday morning. The Pakistan squad comprising 32 members -- players and coaching staff -- could not find seats in a single aircraft and was forced to split into two groups.
After several anxious moments, the SAFF Championship 2023 football match between India and Pakistan is all set to be played as scheduled on Wednesday here at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium. Uncertainty had shrouded the arrival of Pakistan team from Mauritius after the delay in processing their visa. But on Monday night the Indian Embassy cleared all the pending applications, paving way for the smooth travel of Pakistan squad to India for the tournament. Pakistan team was in Mauritius to take part in the Four-Nation tournament, which was clinched by Djibouti.
The decks have been cleared for Pakistan football team for its participation in the SAFF Football Championship after receiving visas travel to India on Monday. According to sources, the Pakistan team is on the lookout for the earliest flight out of Mauritius to reach India in time for their opening match against India on January 21 at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru. The match is scheduled for a 7.30 PM start. However their travel itinerary was not yet known.
Pakistan football team's arrival here for the SAFF Football Championship has been delayed due to a visa issue but the squad is expected to reach in time for its opening fixture against India on June 21. Pakistan squad was expected to land in Bengaluru on Sunday after completing the Four Nation Cup in Mauritius. However, the team is still in Mauritius, having missed the scheduled flight to India this morning. Pakistan is scheduled to face India on June 21 at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium at 7.30 PM IST, but a KSFA official said there was no concern regarding the neighbouring team's arrival.
