Stern Test Awaits India In SAFF Championship Match Against Kuwait

Already through to the semifinals, India will face their sternest test in the SAFF Championship football when they face formidable Kuwait in their last league match in Bengaluru on Tuesday. With six points from two wins, the same as India, Kuwait have also entered the semifinals and Tuesday's match at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium will decide the Group A winner. Pakistan and Nepal face each other in the other match of the day, which has been rendered inconsequential as both the sides are already out of contention for the semifinals after losing their two earlier matches.

India Beat Spirited Nepal 2-0 To Qualify For SAFF Championships Semifinals

Captain Sunil Chhetri found the target yet again as India beat a spirited Nepal 2-0 in their second group match to book a berth in the SAFF Championship semifinals on Saturday. Chhetri (61st minute) scored his fourth goal of the tournament before Mahesh Singh (70th) struck to notch up the home side's second consecutive win. India had beaten Pakistan 4-0 in their opening match on Wednesday with Chhetri scoring a hat-trick. Chhetri (91 goals from 139 matches) had already become the second most prolific scorer among Asians -- after Ali Daei (109 from 148 matches) of Iran -- and third among active players in the world. He is the most prolific goal-getter among active Asian players.

Indian Football Team Head Coach Igor Stimac To Serve Just One-Match Ban, To Return At Helm Against Kuwait In SAFF Championships

Head coach Igor Stimac will return to the India dug out in the game against Kuwait on Tuesday after serving one-match ban for his red-card offence against Pakistan in the home side's SAFF Championships opener. South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) General Secretary Anwarul Huq told PTI that Stimac's offence was not serious enough to attract a ban of more than one match and as such it will not be referred to the SAFF Disciplinary Committee for further action. "He (Stimac) will serve a one-match ban, not more than that," he said from Dhaka on Thursday.

SAFF Championship: India Look To Ward Off Nepal Threat And Move Closer To Semifinals

A 4-0 hammering of Pakistan giving them the perfect start, India will have a wonderful opportunity to move closer to the semifinals of the SAFF Championship when they face Nepal in Bengaluru on Saturday. On paper, the hosts hold all the aces, evidenced by an overwhelming 16-2 overall head-to-head record in 23 matches played between them, a sequence that started in the 1985 SAF Games. The last meeting between the two sides came during the 2021 SAFF Championship when India defeated Nepal 3-0.
