BCCI Calls Special General Meeting On March 1 To Appoint New Joint Secretary

The BCCI has convened a Special General Meeting (SGM) in Mumbai on March 1 to appoint a new joint secretary after the position was left vacant following the elevation of Devjit Saikia to the post of the board's secretary. Assam Cricket Association's (ACA) Saikia had succeeded Jay Shah in the secretary's position last month, after the latter took over as the chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC) on December 1. The BCCI sent out the SGM notice to the state associations with a single-item agenda.

The batter, who came out to play at the No. 4 slot, was nearly benched for the series opener but an injury to Virat Kohli paved the way for his place in the team. After the end of the match, Iyer shared a fiery post on social media, speaking his mind as he made a memorable return to the national team.

India's nearly comfortable 4-wicket victory against England in the first ODI of the 3-match series saw some proven performers rise to the occasion. Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer were the top-scoring batters for India on Thursday, scoring 87 and 59 respectively while skipper Rohit Sharma flopped yet again. However, the team also missed the ever-reliant No. 3 Virat Kohli in the game due to an injury, while Yashasvi Jaiswal made his ODI debut. However, a rather shocking development took place after the conclusion of the match as Shreyas Iyer revealed that he wasn't originally supposed to play the match.

Skipper Rohit Sharma on Thursday said there isn't anything specific which the Indian team wants to try and achieve ahead of the Champions Trophy but would look to keep ticking all the boxes like they did against England in the first ODI in Nagpur. Barring a minor hiccup towards the end of a modest 249-run chase when they slipped from 221/3 to 235/6, India produced a near-perfect show to take a 1-0 lead with a four-wicket win. "Nothing specific. Overall as a team, I just want us to keep making sure that we keep doing the right things as often as possible. There is nothing specific that we want to try and achieve," Rohit told the broadcaster after the match.

It isn't often that Virat Kohli goes on to miss a match due to an injury but the talismanic batter had no option but to sit out of the first ODI against England due to a knee trouble. Kohli's knee was heavily strapped when during practice sessions ahead of the series opener but some swelling was witnessed once the players returned to the hotel. The situation prompted the team management - including skipper Rohit Sharma and head coach Gautam Gambhir - to have a Plan B ready, which was Shreyas Iyer. After Virat went on to miss the first ODI, a big update has emerged for the second match.

Shreyas Iyer proved his class once again, as he smashed a swashbuckling half-century in the first ODI between India and England at Nagpur. From being set to not feature in the playing XI at all, Shreyas was drafted in after Virat Kohli suffered a knee issue the night before the game. He grabbed the opportunity with both hands, slamming a 36-ball 59 to help India reach the target of 249 with more than 11 overs to spare. Iyer also showed that he had significantly worked on his weak areas, particularly against the short ball.

The injury suffered by senior batter Virat Kohli ahead of Thursday's first ODI against England in Nagpur may turn out to be a minor setback for India as the issue does not look serious and the former India captain is likely to be back in the next match. India captain Rohit Sharma informed at the toss that Kohli had injured his right knee during practice on Wednesday evening and therefore was withdrawn from the first ODI. Though both the Indian team management and Kohli himself would feel disappointed in losing the opportunity to play the match, the injury seems minor.
