Never before has he navigated the choppy waters of leadership but Jasprit Bumrah will certainly like to showcase his captaincy acumen while leading a slightly under-prepared India against a vastly improved England in the rescheduled fifth Test, starting on Friday. India were leading the five-match series 2-1 when multiple COVID-19 cases in their camp led to the postponement of the final game which was a part of the World Test Championship.
Cameron Green and Usman Khawaja hit half-centuries to put Australia ahead by 101 runs against Sri Lanka after abysmal weather set back the second day of the opening Test on Thursday. The tourists reached 313 for eight when bad light stopped play in Galle after storms and ferocious winds that collapsed a spectator stand and delayed the start of play until the afternoon. Skipper Pat Cummins, on 26, and Nathan Lyon, on eight, were batting at close of play after the tourists dominated the two sessions.
Starting a new era in 50-over cricket without the peerless Mithali Raj, the newly-appointed skipper Harmanpreet Kaur, will seek an improved performance across departments from his players as Indian women eye a winning start against hosts Sri Lanka in a three-match series, starting Friday. India will be without their two pillars -- Mithali, who retired from cricket earlier this month, and Jhulan Goswami, who is nursing a side strain. The absence of international cricket's most prolific duo is just one of several concerns for captain Kaur ahead of the ODI series opener.
Indian cricket team followers were in for a shock when KL Rahul, who was supposed to lead India in the T20I series against South Africa, was ruled out of the five-match contest due to an injury earlier this month. The news came on the eve of the first match in Delhi and Rishabh Pant was named as Rahul's replacement in the skipper's post. Rahul has over the years had recurrent lower abdominal related fitness issues, including groin strains and hamstring injuries. He recently underwent surgery in Germany and then shared the news on social media.
Jasprit Bumrah will lead India in the rescheduled fifth Test against England in Edgbaston, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) informed through an official release on Thursday. The series decider begins in Birmingham on Friday. There was suspense over Rohit Sharma's availability after head coach Rahul Dravid told the media that he was not yet "ruled out" on Wednesday. The announcement that Bumrah will lead in Rohit's absence came just moments ahead of the captain's press conference on the eve of the match. Wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant has been named the vice-captain for the match.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) finally put an end to the suspense surrounding India captain Rohit Sharma's availability for the Edgbaston Test vs England. A BCCI release on Thursday stated that Rohit had returned a positive COVID-19 test on Thursday morning and as a result paceman Jasprit Bumrah was going to lead India in the match, with wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant as his deputy. Immediately after the release was sent, former India opening batter Wasim Jaffer put out a tweet with his India playing XI for the match.
The controversial All India Football Federation (AIFF) general secretary Kushal Das has resigned from his post on "health grounds", ending his 12-year tenure which was often marred by allegations of financial improprieties. Das, who was appointed to the top post in 2010, has been on leave since June 20 on health grounds, though many in football circles said he was kept out of his job by the Committee of Administrators (COA) after a Comptroller and Auditor General audit found multiple financial anomalies, which are being currently probed.
