The Indian women's fours team of lawn bowls made history on Tuesday by bagging a gold medal in the Commonwealth Games 2022, being played in Birmingham. It came as an unprecedented feat as this was the first time India secured a medal in the lawn bowls event. Team India that comprised of Lovely Choubey, Pinki, Nayanmoni Saikia and Rupa Rani Tirkey defeated South Africa 17-10 in the summit clash. Earlier, they had defeated New Zealand in a thrilling semi-final match.
Mumbai Indians's cricketer Kumar Kartikeya on Wednesday revealed that he has met his family after nine years and three months and can't express his feeling on being with his dear ones after a long time. The Indian women's hockey team survived some anxious moments before beating lower-ranked Canada 3-2 in its must-win Pool A match to qualify for the semifinals of the Commonwealth Games on Wednesday. Rajya Sabha on Wednesday took up a bill that seeks to provide an independent mechanism for anti-doping adjudication and legal sanctity to anti-doping agencies. The National Anti-Doping Bill, which was passed by Lok Sabha last week, seeks to provide a statutory framework in the form of legislation for the prohibition of doping in sports in the country. Introducing the bill for discussion and passage in the Upper House, Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Anurag Thakur said it intends to accomplish building institutional capabilities in anti-doping, enable the hosting of major sporting events, protect rights of all sportspersons, ensure time-bound justice to athletes and enhance cooperation among agencies in fighting doping in sports.
Legendary athlete PT Usha on Wednesday batted for bringing all competitions under National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) and sought more focus on the field of sports medicine and science to help players recover from injuries. In her maiden speech in Rajya Sabha, Usha, who was participating in the discussion on the National Anti-Doping Bill, said the country ranks third in the number of individuals who tested positive for steroids and were punished for doping.
Indian pugilists Hussamuddin Mohammed and Nitu Ganghas progressed to the semifinals of men's 57kg and women's 48kg respectively to assure the country of two more medals at the Commonwealth Games here on Wednesday.
