This was the first time since 1989 that an Indian tennis player beat a seeded opponent in a Grand Slam. The last instance was back in 1989 when Ramesh Krishnan defeated Mats Wilander, the then world number one and defending champion at the Australian Open. This victory was one of the biggest achievements in Nagal's career and a significant step forward for a tennis player who was in the headlines for his struggles.
Ajinkya Rahane, the man who captained the Indian team in the memorable Border-Gavaskar Test series triumph in Australia in 2020-21 season, finds himself in a sticky position where he seems to have been fazed out of the Indian team. Rahane, who is with the Mumbai squad in the ongoing Ranji Trophy campaign, understands his situation but has not given up on playing 100 Tests for India as he remains determined for a comeback.
