Former India player Karsan Ghavri on Wednesday slammed the decision to ignore veteran Cheteshwar Pujara for the Test series against England especially with the depleted batting line-up in the absence of Virat Kohli and KL Rahul. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah backed India batting talisman Virat Kohli's decision to miss India's ongoing Test series against England, saying he has the right to ask for personal leave. Speaking to reporters in Rajkot on Wednesday at the Saurashtra Cricket Association (SCA) stadium ahead of India's third Test against England, Shah said that the former India skipper is not someone who would ask for leave for no reason. He added that everyone should trust Kohli and back him. "If a person, for the first time in a 15-year career, asks for personal leave, it's his right. Virat is not a player who will ask for leave for no reason. We need to trust our player and back him," Shah was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo.

Indian cricket team skipper Rohit Sharma was rocked by a fiery bouncer from England fast bowler Mark Wood on Day 1 of the third Test match in Rajkot on Thursday. BCCI secretary Jay Shah confirmed on Wednesday that Rohit Sharma will be leading the Indian cricket team in the upcoming T20 World Cup. Shah was present at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Khanderi, which was renamed after veteran cricket administrator Niranjan Shah, as the chief guest. During his speech, he said that although India lost the Cricket World Cup 2023 final against Australia, they will excel in the T20 World Cup under Rohit's leadership. "In 2023 (final) at Ahmedabad, even though we did not win the World Cup after 10 straight wins, we won hearts. I want to promise you that in 2024 (T20 World Cup) in Barbados (venue for the final), under Rohit Sharma's captaincy, hum Bharat ka jhanda gaadenge (we will hoist the Indian flag)," Shah said at the end of his speech.

Interacting with the media on the sidelines of the renaming of the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Shah said the chairman of selectors will be given a free hand to take a call on his own if a player refuses to follow instructions given by the team management.
