Having become the first Indian male athlete to qualify for the long jump finals in the World Championships, Sreeshankar had raised hopes of a historic medal in the showpiece. India's Murali Sreeshankar finished seventh in a 12-athlete field in the men's long jump final at the World Athletics Championships on Sunday. His best effort was a 7.96m jump which came in his first attempt. HIs other successful attempts were of 7.89m and 7.83m. The 23-year-old from Palakkad, Kerala, led the field after his first attempt of 7.96m but could not hold on to his position at the mega-event in Oregon, USA as other athletes came up with better efforts. China's Jianan Wang took home the gold medal with an effort of 8.36m, which came in his last attempt. Greece's Miltiadis Tentoglou won the silver medal with an effort of 8.32m while Switzerland's Simon Ehammer (8.16m) won the bronze medal.

Sreeshankar, who had entered the championships as a dark horse for a medal at second spot in the season's top list, had a best jump of exactly 8m to finish second in qualification round Group B and seventh overall. Anju Bobby George was the first Indian to make it to the World Championships long jump finals and first to win a medal -- bronze in 2003 edition in Paris. Two other Indians, Jeswin Aldrin and Muhammed Anees Yahiya failed to make it to the final round after finishing ninth and 11th in Group A qualification round with best jumps of 7.79m and 7.73m respectively. Those who achieved 8.15m or the 12 best performers from across the two groups qualify for the finals to be held on Sunday (6:50am IST).
Indian long-jumper Murali Sreeshankar qualified for the final of the men's long jump at the World Athletics Championships with a best attempt of 8m in the heats. He finished seventh in the heats and was the only Indian to progress. Jeswin Aldrin (best attempt - 7.79m) and Muhammed Anees Yahiya (best attempt 7.73m) were the other Indians in the fray but they could not finish among the top-12 in the heats and hence failed to progress to the final.
