Cameroon progressed to the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations with a 2-1 win against 10-man Comoros, despite a courageous performance from their depleted opponents. The big news before the game was that Comoros would have to start an outfield player in goal, with first-choice goalkeeper Salim Ben Boina injured in their shock win against Ghana and back-ups Moyadh Ousseini and Ali Ahamada subsequently testing positive for Covid.
YAOUNDE : Comoros Islands were forced to field a fullback in goal for Monday’s Africa Cup of Nations last-16 tie against hosts Cameroon in Yaounde after being refused permission to use goalkeeper Ali Ahamada, despite him returning a negative COVID-19 test result.
Former Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor has said his old side “never knew how to forgive” when asked about Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang being frozen out at the club. This year’s Africa Cup of Nations has certainly not been short on surprises and amid the shock results and unexpected incidents, there are the wonderful stores of the supposed minnows upsetting their more high-profile counterparts to make it through to the knockout stages. While of course everybody was perhaps rightly fixated on Comoros beating Ghana to advance to the last-16 from Group B, there was an equally fascinating story taking place in Group F.
Comoros will not be forced to field an outfield player in goal for their historic Africa Cup of Nations last-16 match after goalkeeper Ali Ahamada tested negative for Covid-19. The debutants are set to face hosts Cameroon after pulling off one of the all-time tournament shocks by beating traditional African heavyweights Ghana 3-2 to advance from the group stage.
YAOUNDE : Comoros Islands goalkeeper Ali Ahamada has returned a negative COVID-19 test and will be available to play on Monday against hosts Cameroon in the last 16 of the Africa Cup of Nations finals, officials said.
