Donna Vekic produced another upset to take out sixth seed Maria Sakkari and reach the Berlin Open final on a busy Saturday. Both players took to the court twice on the penultimate day of action in the German capital, after rain on Friday forced the quarter-finals to be pushed forward a day. Ad Sakkari overcame Marketa Vondruosova in the last eight, while Vekic beat lucky loser Elina Avanesyan, both in straight sets.
BERLIN : Croatia's Donna Vekic had to play twice on Saturday but did not drop a set as she cruised into the German Open final with a 6-4 7-6(8) victory over world number eight Maria Sakkari of Greece.
Marco Bezzecchi continued his fantastic weekend at the Dutch Grand Prix after claiming his first sprint race victory at Assen and a first pole of the season. Maria Sakkari progressed to the Berlin Open semi-finals with a 7-6 6-1 win over Marketa Vondrousova, but was made to sweat after a nervy first set. The Mooney VR46 rider's time of 1:31.472 ensured he would take pole for Saturday's sprint and main race, becoming the 13th different pole sitter in the last 13 races on the circuit. Ad Bezzecchi took his place at the top of an all-Italian podium, as reigning world champion Francesco Bagnaia of Ducati finished 0.061 seconds further adrift after eight laps, while Mooney rider Luca Marini was 0.158 seconds back in third.
