Shifted to Denver’s giant NFL stadium to accommodate the huge demand to see Argentina’s World Cup-winning icon, the game appeared to be drifting Colorado’s way after a spirited home team fightback from 2-0 down. But Messi, having already converted a penalty, had other ideas. With just over 10 minutes remaining, the Argentine sprinted onto a through ball sent down the right by Rodrigo De Paul. He dribbled into the box and somehow threaded a shot with his favorite left foot through three defenders and past the keeper into the corner. It handed Messi’s longtime friend Guillermo Hoyos a win on his debut as Miami coach, after Javier Mascherano departed the club for “personal reasons” Tuesday, just four months after guiding the club to its first MLS Cup title. “We have the greatest player in history, someone who completely shifts the momentum of matches,” said a delighted Hoyos. NUREMBERG: Veteran endurance driver Juha Miettinen was killed in a seven-car pile-up during a race at Germany’s Nuerburgring on Saturday. The race, which also featured four-time Formula One world champion Max Verstappen, was halted after the accident with organizers suspending the event. It was part of the Nuerburgring Langstrecken Series (NLS) qualifiers for a 24-hour race to be held in May, in which Verstappen is set to take part. AFP subsidiary SID reported that the Dutchman was not on the course at the time of the accident but is due to drive on Sunday. The accident took place just 25 minutes into the four-hour event before an incline at the Klostertal stage of the track. Miettinen, 66, died in the course medical center, while six other drivers were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. “Despite the immediate arrival of emergency medical personnel, paramedics were unable to save Juha Miettinen after he was removed from the vehicle,” the organizers announced later in the evening. “The thoughts of everyone involved in the Nuerburgring 24 Hours are with Juha Miettinen’s family.” Writing on social media, Verstappen said he was “shocked” by the accident and the death of Miettinen. “Motorsport is something we all love, but in times like this it is a reminder of how dangerous it can be. “Sending my heartfelt condolences to Juha’s family and loved ones.” Motorsport governing body FIA also expressed condolences on social media on Saturday night. “The FIA is sad to learn of the passing of Juha Miettinen following an incident in today’s first race of the ADAC 24h Nuerburgring Qualifiers. “Our thoughts are with his family and friends and everyone involved in the event.” The race is scheduled to continue on Sunday,
MUNICH: Bayern Munich and Germany forward Serge Gnabry could miss this summer’s World Cup after tearing a muscle in his thigh, the Bundesliga club announced on Saturday. Bayern published a statement saying Gnabry would be out for “an extended period” due to a “torn adductor muscle in his right thigh.” The defending champions did not provide a time period but German media reported Gnabry had played his last match of the club season and could miss this summer’s World Cup. The 30-year-old started both legs as Bayern beat Real Madrid to reach the semifinals, where they will face PSG and the club did not reveal when or how the injury occurred. In 21 league games this season, the former Arsenal player has eight goals and seven assists. Gnabry is a regular member of Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann’s squad and has played 59 times for his country, scoring 26 goals. Also through to the semifinals of the German Cup, Bayern can win the Bundesliga as early as Sunday by avoiding defeat at home against Stuttgart.
