The United States Tennis Association (USTA) and the US Open are hoping Novak Djokovic is successful in his bid to enter the country after the Serbian, who is not vaccinated against Covid-19, applied for special permission last month.
Novak Djokovic's bid to gain entry to the United States for ATP events at Indian wells and Miami received support from the US Tennis Association and US Open organizers on Friday.
Novak Djokovic suffered his first loss of the season in Friday's semi-final defeat to Daniil Medvedev at the Dubai Tennis Championships but he was pleased with his fitness levels during the tournament, having returned from a hamstring injury.
Novak Djokovic’s hopes of playing Indian Wells and the Miami Open remain up in the air with under a week to go until the former starts. World No. 1 Djokovic has not played either ATP Masters 1000 event since 2019, and is currently not able to enter the United States as he is unvaccinated against Covid-19.
The United States Tennis Association and US Open are «hopeful» Novak Djokovic will be successful in his petition to enter the United States for the upcoming events at Indian Wells and Miami. Indian Wells starts on March 8 and Miami on March 22. As it stands Djokovic is not allowed to travel to the US, which at the moment is the only country on the ATP Tour that requires international travellers to be vaccinated against Covid-19.
Republican lawmakers, Sen. Rick Scott and Sen. Marco Rubio, sent a letter to the president on Friday, urging the Biden administration to grant 22-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic a waiver to enter the U.S. for the Miami Open later this month, despite his vaccine status.
