Not letting yourself overanalyze is the hardest thing, says red-hot PolePARIS: Iga Swiatek was in full flight at Roland Garros this fortnight. Wings spread and soaring. Pressure? The wind beneath her wings perhaps. Swiatek, the world No. 1 who is riding tennis' hottest wave with 35 successive wins, the most in the women's game since 2000, won titles in Doha, Indian Wells, Miami, Stuttgart, Rome and now the French Open in Paris. The 21-year-old, with a growing endorsement portfolio is the game's poster girl for proficiency.
From bashful Rafael Nadal fan to the hard rock of Led Zeppelin and Guns N' Roses to the undisputed queen of women's tennis, Iga Swiatek has come a long way.
Iga Swiatek did one better. The 21-year-old went right ahead and rained a storm of winners to claim her second French Open crown. As Coco Gauff’s return floated over the baseline a little after tea time on Saturday, Swiatek whipped around and faced her box before going down on the clay. Her face buried in the palm of her hand. The Pole’s team – coach Tomasz Wiktorowski, mental coach Daria Abramowicz, trainer Maciej Ryszczuk and her Olympian dad Tomasz Swiatek -- rose to their feet to applaud the most dominant player in tennis today. At the other end of the packed-to-the rafter venue, Gauff, who was in her first Grand Slam final, dropped heavily on a courtside seat, sobbing silently. Tears ran down the 18-year-old’s cheeks unabated.
From bashful Rafael Nadal fan to the hard rock of Led Zeppelin and Guns N' Roses to the undisputed queen of women's tennis, Iga Swiatek has come a long way. Having captured a first major at the pandemic-hit and delayed French Open in October 2020, Swiatek added a second at Roland Garros on Saturday.
Iga Swiatek cruised past teen star Coco Gauff with a 6-1, 6-3 win in the French Open 2022 women's singles final to claim her second Roland Garros title on Saturday. The Pole now has 35 wins on the trot, matching Venus Williams' record for the longest winning streak by a women's player in the 21st century. Venus Williams won five WTA titles and the Olympic gold medal during her unbeaten run at the start of the century, which no one has improved on since.
Iga Świątek has won the 2022 French Open and equalled Venus Williams’ record for the longest women’s winning streak of this millennium.
