Veteran Indian cricket team spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was all praise for the United Arab Emirates (UAE) after they registered a historic victory over New Zealand in the second T20I encounter on Saturday. He pointed out how franchise cricket has slowly been decreasing the gulf between top sides and associate nations before mentioning Rashid Khan and Afghanistan's meteoric rise on the global stage. “UAE beating New Zealand is a big achievement and it's also showing us what franchisee cricket has succeeded in doing. There is hope for the next generation cricketer coming from countries that aren't mainstream test nations and that's good news for the game. When @rashidkhan_19 broke into the IPL, Afghans weren't a feared cricketing nation at world cups but now no one can refuse that fact. The future may well see other nations having representations at the IPL and turning the fortunes of the game in their respective countries. Well done UAE,” he wrote.
United Arab Emirates captain Muhammad Waseem made 55 to set up a seven-wicket win over New Zealand on Saturday in Dubai as the hosts levelled the three-match T20 series. Set 143 to win after again choosing to bowl first, the UAE lost opener Aryansh Sharma without scoring before Waseem and Vriitya Aravind (25) steadied the innings. Waseem struck four fours and three sixes in his 29-ball knock, which ended when he skied left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner to extra cover. Asif Khan finished off the job with an unbeaten 48 as he smacked New Zealand skipper Tim Southee for three boundaries in the 16th over to seal a famous victory with 26 balls to spare.
Steve Smith and Mitchell Starc have been ruled out of Australia's white-ball tour of South Africa with injuries, but are expected to be fit for the Cricket World Cup.
When Aryansh Sharma was preparing to leave home ahead of his T20 international debut on Thursday, he might have been minded to pack his autograph book alongside his bat, pads and wicketkeeping gloves.
A half-century by Tim Seifert and a scorching five-wicket haul by pacer Tim Southee helped New Zealand clinch a hard-fought, narrow win against United Arab Emirates (UAE) in the first match of the three-match T20I series in Dubai on Thursday. With this win, NZ has a 1-0 lead over UAE, who fought really hard to push NZ to their limits. Put to bat first by UAE, NZ lost opener Chad Bowes on the very first ball.
UAE vs NZ, 1st T20I, Live Updates:United Arab Emirates skipper Muhammed Waseem won the toss and opted to bowl against New Zealand in the first T20I of the three-match series on Thursday in Dubai. The Blackcaps will be playing their first T20I match since April and will look to prepare for the upcoming series against England and the T20 World Cup 2024. Interestingly, the two teams have never played a T20I match against each other before and this will be first time that New Zealand and UAE will be squaring off against each other in the shortest format. Not so long ago, the arrival of a side from a Test-playing nation to face the UAE in full international cricket was more or less unheard of.
