Ajinkya Rahane's knock of 44 runs put Mahendra Singh Dhoni's half-century in vain as Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) defeated Chennai Super Kings in the opening game of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022, here at Wankhede stadium in Mumbai on Saturday. Rahane scored 44 runs while Umesh Yadav scalped two wickets as KKR registered a six-wicket victory over CSK with 9 balls to spare.
Kolkata Knight Riders beat defending champions Chennai Super Kings by six wickets as Mahendra Singh Dhoni's first tournament fifty in three years went in vain in the IPL lung opener here on Saturday. Unburdened by captaincy, Dhoni, who relinquished the leadership role just two days back, smashed an unbeaten 50 off 38 balls to take CSK to 131 for 5 after being put in to bat.
Chennai Super Kings batsman Mahendra Singh Dhoni bailed his team out from a precarious position with a superb 50 not out against Kolkata Knight Riders in the opening match of the IPL 2022. Dhoni added 70 runs for the sixth wicket alongwith the new skipper Ravindra Jadeja to take CSK to a respectable total of 131/5.
MS Dhoni turned the clock back at the Wankhede Stadium as he hit 7 boundaries and a six on his way to a half-century off just 38 deliveries in the opening match of IPL 2022 between CSK and KKR. This is the 24th time that Dhoni has scored a fifty in the IPL. The former CSK skipper came in to bat with the team struggling at 61/5 in 10.5 overs.
BCCI on Saturday felicitated Tokyo Olympians, including gold medallist javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra, with cash awards ahead of the IPL opener between Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders. The Board handed Chopra a cheque of Rs 1 crore while Tokyo Games bronze medal winning boxer Lovlina Borgohain was given Rs 25 lakh for her achievement.

CSK are four wickets down after being put on to bat first by KKR captain Shreyas Iyer. Meanwhile, Ravindra Jadeja will lead CSK this season after MS Dhoni stepped down from his role earlier this week.
