Indian ace shuttler and Olympic medalist PV Sindhu expressed happiness at being selected as Team India's torchbearer at the opening ceremony of Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) on Wednesday announced shuttler PV Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medallist, as the Flagbearer of Team India at the Opening Ceremony of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. Indian men's hockey captain Manpreet Singh will be the second flag-bearer. "It is a great honour to be bestowed with the responsibility to lead the contingent and hold the flag at such an august gathering. I am extremely happy and I wish all my fellow contingent all the best for the Games. I would like to thank IOA also for choosing me as the flag bearer," said Sindhu in a statement as per Badminton Association of India (BAI) Media.

To accommodate Lovlina's unjust demand to allow her personal coach, Sandhya Gurung, to stay with her at the Games Village, an accredited official team doctor's village card was cancelled, the women's team's head coach was moved to a far-away hotel accommodating the 'extra team officials' (ETO) with no full-time access to his boxers and an assistant coach and a physio were forced to share a common room. Not only this, for the eight member men's boxing team, just one coach - head coach Narendra Rana - and physio Subhash Rajpat Pal will be available round-the-clock at the village.

Commonwealth Games set for glitzy launch in Birmingham
Commonwealth Games lacking several track and field stars but still boasting elite performers. Competitors from 72 nations and territories -- many of which are former British colonies -- will be vying for medals in 19 sports over a jam-packed 11 days in the Midlands. Away from the marquee athletics and swimming events, women's Twenty20 cricket makes its debut and 3x3 basketball will feature for the first time while sedate lawn bowls is a fixture. There is an integrated para sports programme in some events. The Games, held every four years, are often criticised as a quirky sporting relic but will be launched in style at Thursday's opening ceremony, headlined by 1980s pop band Duran Duran, formed in Birmingham. Sporting powerhouse Australia have topped the medals table at every Games since 1990 except in 2014, when England finished top in Glasgow -- the last time the event was held on British soil. England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland compete as separate teams during the Commonwealths rather than as a combined British outfit. In the pool, Emma McKeon, Ariarne Titmus, Kaylee McKeown and teenage sensation Mollie O'Callaghan will lead the charge for a star-studded Australian team. Double Olympic champion Titmus, 21, opted out of the recent world championships in Budapest to keep herself fresh for Birmingham. "I am so excited and I think we've got a great team going in. It's insane the depth we have," said the Commonwealth Games 400 metres and 800m freestyle champion.
Countries need to balance domestic leagues and international schedule: ICC
The ICC board met in Birmingham and discussed at length how to keep the format alive. "About relevance of ODIs, we talked about the structure of the game an d the way they are incorporated in FTP is countries and fans in different countries have different preferences with regards to formats. I think at this stage there were some discussions not specifically about ODIs but mix of formats within the calendar," ICC CEO Geoff Allardice said on Tuesday.

Commonwealth Games (CWG) ambitions have been badly hit by the last-minute withdrawal of Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra, but they still have high hopes of gold in several sports including boxing and badminton. The Commonwealth's most populous country is not generally known as a global sporting powerhouse -- except for cricket -- but it has regularly performed well at the Games. India came third in the medals table behind hosts Australia, and England, at the last edition of the Games at the Gold Coast in 2018, and were in the top five at the previous four.

Test results show 'deviation', forcing badminton star into temporary isolationNEW DELHI: Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu had a Covid-19 scare upon her arrival in Birmingham for the Commonwealth Games (CWG), when her RT-PCR test results showed some deviations, which resulted in the authorities forcing her into isolation for some time, TOI has reliably learnt. An impressive 10-member badminton contingent had left for Birmingham in the early hours of July 25 from Hyderabad. According to sources in Birmingham, some "invariability" was detected in Sindhu's RTPCR test upon her arrival in the Games city and she was put under observation.
