Jyothi Yarraji clinched silver in Women's 100m Hurdles event at Asian Games 2023 to complete a momentous day for India at the competition which saw them winning 9 medals in athletics - 2 gold, 4 silver and 3 bronze. However, the medal was not without its fair share of controversies as Yarraji was initially third in the race but her bronze was upgraded to silver after Chinese runner Wu Yanni was disqualified for a false start. Both Yarraji and Wu were under review after the false start but the organisers decided to disqualify just Wu as she was the first runner to rush in during the false start to the race.
Injured HS Prannoy's absence hurt India as they went down fighting 2-3 against badminton powerhouse China to sign off with their first-ever silver medal in the men's team championships at the Asian Games on Sunday. After world No. 7 Prannoy was ruled out due to a back injury, Lakshya Sen produced a gutsy show in the first singles and doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty then bossed over their opponents to put India 2-0 ahead. So, it was once again left to Srikanth to carry the team on his shoulders. The former world No. 1, who had produced a gritty show against South Korea in the semifinals, couldn't go the distance this time despite a healthy lead and multiple game points as China fought back to make it 1-2.
India's Murali Sreeshankar on Sunday won a silver medal in the Men's Long Jump Final with a best finish of 8.19 meters at the ongoing 19th Asian Games. Meanwhile, Jeswin Aldrin finished in 8th position in the same event with a best jump of 7.76m. China's long jumpers took home gold and bronze as Wang Jianan finished at the top of the podium with best jump of 8.22m, while Shi Yuhao bagged third spot with 8.10m. Sreeshankar started his event with a failed attempt however he recovered well and in his second attempt, with a jump of 7.97 metres. Sreeshankar with a fantastic jump crossed the 8-metre mark and landed a jump of 8.01m. With this leap, he jumped up to the second position.
Indian men's and women's teams produced a fine effort to register easy wins over their rivals in the third round of the chess competition at the Asian Games in Hangzhou on Sunday. The top-seeded men's team comprising GMs D Gukesh and R Praggnanandhaa, Arjun Erigaisi and P Harikrishna beat Kazakhstan 3-1. The women's side, which is seeded second here, crushed Indonesia 3.5-0.5 for a third straight win. The India No.1 D Gukesh scored his first win of the event, beating GM Rinat Jumabayev.
