HANGZHOU: Host nation China won the first gold medal of the Asian Games on Sunday (Sep 24), when Zou Jiaqi and Qiu Xiuping dominated the women's lightweight double sculls rowing final.

Riding on a Sunil Chhetri strike, the Indian men's football team held Myanmar to a 1-1 draw and progressed to the round of 16 in the Asian Games on Sunday. They will play Saudi Arabia in the pre-quarters. Chhetri scored from the spot in the 23rd minute but it was Rahim Ali who earned the penalty when he was brought down inside the box by Hein Zeyar Lin. While Lin was shown a yellow card for his sliding tackle, the peerless Chhetri made no mistake in finding the back of the net, in what was a repeat of the act he performed against Bangladesh in the second group game two days ago.

Indian Grandmaster Vidit Santosh Gujrathi, the third highest ranked player in the field, suffered a shock defeat at the hands of Kazakhstan's IM Kazybek Nogerbek in the second round of the men's individual event at the Asian Games in Hangzhou on Sunday. In the women's event, India's top players -- Koneru Humpy and D Harika -- started well, securing wins in the first two rounds. Having started with a win over Bangladesh IM Mohammed Fahad Rahman in the first round, Gujrathi faced a reverse at the hands of his Kazakh opponent.

Indian athlete Mayank Chaphekar's landmark Asian Games 2023 campaign ended in the semi-finals of the men's individual modern pentathlon event in Hangzhou on Sunday. He failed to make it to the final after finishing 13th in the semi-finals with total of 1005 points. With eight victories and 20 defeats, Mayank Chaphekar had finished 28th among 29th athletes in the fencing ranking round with 166 points.
Indian Fencer Taniksha Khatri Goes Down In Quarter Finals, Misses Medal Narrowly
India narrowly missed out on a medal in Asian Games fencing when Taniksha Khatri lost to world No 2 Man Wai Vivian Kong of Hong Kong 7-15 in individual epee quarterfinal in Hangzhou on Sunday. Khatri, who won her three pool matches to qualify for the knockout round, had seven touches but her opponent was superior and sealed the issue to make the semifinals. A quarterfinal win would have guaranteed at least a bronze medal for the Indian who out-performed her teammate Ena Arora by just four points (15-11) in the round of 32.

Japan pushed Indian men's volleyball team out of the medal race at the Asian Games with a fluent 3-0 win in a cross-group match in Hangzhou on Sunday. Keihan Takahashi emerged as star performer for Japan by logging 21 points, playing a key role in his team's 25-16 25-18 25-17 victory in one hour and 11 minutes. Erin Varghese was top scorer for India with eight points.

Indian men's doubles duo Saketh Myneni and Ramanathan Ramkumar have progressed to pre-quarter-finals at the Asian Games after registering a dominating straight-set win over Nepal's Bastola Abhishek and Khadka Pradip on Sunday. Saketh-Ramanathan defeated Nepal by 6-2, 6-3 in just 57 minutes. Indian tennis player Sumit Nagal started the Asian Games men's singles campaign with a win defeating Macao China's Ho Tin Marco 6-0, 6-0 in straight sets on Sunday. Nagal had received a bye in the first round at Asian Games 2023.
